How to Clean an AEM Dryflow Air Filter Without Oil
An AEM Dryflow filter is not cleaned like an oiled cotton-gauze filter or a foam motorcycle filter. Its synthetic media works without an added oil coating. The useful maintenance decision is therefore not which filter oil to buy, but whether the filter is genuinely a reusable Dryflow, how to flush dirt out without driving it inward, and whether its seals and media are still sound. Confirm the filter part number before applying this routine to an intake assembly with a different filter installed.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Identify the filter and prepare a clean work area
Read the filter or intake documentation to confirm reusable AEM Dryflow media. Do not identify it solely by color, which changes with dirt and age. Park safely, switch the engine off, and let nearby hot components cool. Keep the cleaner away from ignition sources and follow its handling instructions. Photograph the filter orientation, clamp position, and any surrounding connections before removal. This is filter maintenance; unplugging sensors or changing intake routing is not necessary just to wash a removable filter.
Step 2: Remove the filter without dropping dirt into the intake
Release the clamp or housing fasteners using the intake instructions. Lift the filter away carefully, keeping loose dirt out of the clean-side opening. Protect the exposed intake while working, and keep an explicit reminder to remove any temporary cover before reassembly. Gently tap loose debris from the filter as AEM directs. Do not strike the media against a hard edge. If the gasket is split, the media is torn, or a support is distorted, arrange replacement rather than treating washing as a repair.
Step 3: Apply cleaner and keep the treatment from drying
Follow the AEM cleaning sequence: apply the approved cleaner to both sides, concentrating on the dirtier side, and let it work for about ten minutes without drying on the filter. Set a timer and keep the filter out of hot direct sun during this stage. Do not substitute a strong engine degreaser just because it also removes grease. A label describing a cleaner as safe for metal does not establish that it is safe for filter media or its bonded edges.
Step 4: Rinse from the clean side toward the dirty side
Use low-pressure cool or warm water, not hot water. Direct the rinse from the clean side outward so loosened contamination leaves in the direction opposite normal airflow. For a cone filter, identify the clean interior and dirty exterior before starting. Rotate it as needed to rinse evenly, without squeezing or crushing the pleats. Avoid a pressure-washer jet. Keep the outlet stream where you can see it, and continue until cleaner and loosened dirt have been removed rather than stopping after only the visible outside looks wet.
Step 5: Repeat only if dirt remains
Inspect the media under good light. If the rinse still carries dirt or deposits remain, repeat the approved cleaning and rinsing procedure. Do not scrape between pleats with a screwdriver or try to make an aged filter look factory-new by attacking every stain. Check the end caps and sealing surface separately from the media. A persistent structural defect is more important than cosmetic discoloration. Keep the used wash water and dirty tools away from the clean-side opening and the surface where the filter will dry.
Step 6: Remove excess water and let the filter air-dry
Gently shake off excess water and place the filter on a clean, ventilated surface. This guide uses air drying as a straightforward option; do not rush it with an oven, flame, or contact heater. Plan maintenance when the vehicle can remain unused, or have the correct replacement filter available. AEM’s instructions also permit carefully used compressed air, but that is not a reason to use an uncontrolled workshop jet. Most importantly, do not add oil during drying or afterward: Dryflow media does not require it.
Step 7: Reinstall the filter and verify the fit
Remove every temporary intake cover, wipe the accessible mating surface with a clean cloth, and reinstall the filter in its intended position. Secure the clamp or housing according to the intake instructions, without deforming the filter neck. Check that no rag, tool, or loose fastener remains nearby. AEM allows installation dry or slightly damp; letting it finish air-drying is a convenient conservative choice when time permits. Record the service date and conditions. If fit, drivability, or intake noises have changed, recheck the installation rather than immediately blaming residual dirt.
