Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Choose active-garden or crop-change care
For a growing garden, follow AeroGarden's periodic rinse-and-refill routine—commonly about every four weeks—without damaging live roots. For a finished crop, plan a complete emptying, root removal, cleaning, and sanitizing before new pods. Do not combine plant food, sanitizer, dish soap, or another chemical in the reservoir.
Step 2: Unplug before disassembly
Turn the Harvest off and unplug it from the wall with dry hands. Disconnect pump or deck plugs only as the manual shows. Move the garden away from the outlet and protect its electrical base from sink splashes. Never lift an electrical unit by the lamp arm or cord.
Step 3: Remove plants and old pods
At crop change, cut bulky growth into manageable sections, support the grow deck, and lift pods and roots without yanking the pump cable. Trim tangled roots with clean scissors if the manual permits. Dispose of plant material rather than pushing it into a drain. Remove spacer caps and reusable pod hardware for separate cleaning.
Step 4: Empty the reservoir safely
Pour old nutrient solution into an appropriate drain or disposal location according to product and local guidance, keeping it away from the electrical housing. Do not tip a one-piece base in a way that sends water toward controls, lamp connections, or ventilation. Wipe spills immediately with the unit unplugged.
Step 5: Disassemble the deck and pump by model
Remove the grow deck, pump cover, filter sponge, and pump only when the exact Harvest instructions describe those parts as owner-removable. Photograph pump direction and cable routing. Pull root strands from inlets and openings with fingers or a soft brush; do not cut wiring or pry an impeller housing that is not intended to open.
Step 6: Hand-clean detached washable parts
Wash approved detached plastic pieces in warm water with a small amount of mild dish detergent and a soft brush. Reach pod openings, corners, pump-cover slots, and the water-level float path. Avoid abrasive pads that scratch plastic and create places for buildup. Rinse until no soap or loosened root material remains.
Step 7: Use the dishwasher only when confirmed
AeroGarden says many grow decks are top-rack dishwasher safe, but not every generation or attached component belongs in a dishwasher. Confirm the exact deck, detach all electrical parts, use the specified rack and cycle, and keep the base, pump, cord, lamp, and controls out. Hand washing is the safe fallback when approval is unclear.
Step 8: Sanitize with the approved measured method
Mix only the sanitizer and concentration specified by AeroGarden for the exact model, and apply it for the stated contact time. Never combine sanitizer with vinegar, ammonia, plant food, or soap. Ensure the solution reaches reservoir surfaces without entering electrical areas, then drain and rinse as the instructions require.
Step 9: Rinse, dry, and reassemble
Rinse detached parts and the reservoir until there is no foam, chemical odor, or debris. Dry electrical-adjacent surfaces thoroughly. Reinstall the pump, cover, sponge or filter, float components, deck, and pod spacers in their recorded positions. Route the cable without pinching it and confirm moving parts are unobstructed.
Step 10: Refill and test before planting
Set the Harvest level, fill with clean water to the model mark, reconnect dry plugs, and restore power. Confirm normal pump circulation and no leak before adding plant food and new pods in the prescribed order.
