How to Clean an AeroPress Coffee Maker

Step 1: Eject the puck after brewing

Let pressure release, remove the filter cap and press the coffee puck into compost or trash. Peel off and dispose of a paper filter, or retain a reusable filter for separate cleaning. Do not send a dense puck down a drain. Handle recently brewed parts carefully because the chamber, grounds and liquid can remain hot.

Step 2: Rinse the everyday coffee path

Rinse the filter cap, chamber opening and silicone seal with warm water. AeroPress explains that the plunging seal wipes the chamber, so the normal post-brew clean can be brief. Rub away visible oils with fingers or a soft sponge. Look through filter-cap holes and rinse from both sides; do not enlarge them with a pin.

Step 3: Use mild dish soap when oil remains

Wash the chamber, plunger exterior, cap and stirrer with warm water, mild dish soap and a nonabrasive sponge. Avoid steel wool, scouring powder and rough brushes that can scratch plastic or glass and create places for residue. Rinse until surfaces do not feel slippery or smell like detergent, since leftover soap affects coffee flavor.

Step 4: Remove and clean the silicone seal periodically

AeroPress recommends occasionally removing the seal from the end of the plunger and washing inside and outside with warm water and dish soap. Flex it only enough to release it according to the instructions; do not cut or stretch the sealing edge. Clean the plunger rim hidden beneath it, rinse both pieces and press the seal back evenly with no twisted section.

Step 5: Treat chamber buildup with vinegar

When rinsing does not remove a stubborn film, AeroPress says to soak the chamber in full-strength vinegar for a few hours, then wipe and rinse it. Limit vinegar to the affected compatible chamber and keep the soak controlled. Do not mix vinegar with bleach or another cleaner. Rinse repeatedly and smell the chamber before brewing so no vinegar remains.

Step 6: Choose the correct dishwasher rule

Except for AeroPress Premium, which AeroPress identifies as hand-wash only, the coffee makers are dishwasher safe according to model guidance. Most belong on the top rack; the Clear chamber has broader rack tolerance in current instructions. Secure small pieces so they cannot fall onto a heating element. When uncertain, hand washing is gentler and avoids model mix-ups.

Step 7: Hand-wash AeroPress Premium gently

Use lukewarm water, gentle dish soap and a gentle cloth on Premium glass and metal components. Avoid sudden temperature changes, hard sink impacts, dishwasher heat and abrasive tools. Support the glass chamber rather than gripping an attachment point. Inspect for chips or cracks and retire damaged glass instead of testing it with hot water.

Step 8: Dry and store with the seal relaxed

Shake water from filter holes and stand parts separately on a clean rack until dry. Store the plunger pushed fully through the chamber or separated so the silicone seal is not compressed inside the chamber for long periods. Keep paper filters dry. A reusable metal filter should be dried completely to reduce staining at its rim.

Step 9: Diagnose sticking before adding lubricant

If the plunger becomes sticky, clean coffee oil from the seal and chamber first and inspect seal seating. Do not apply cooking oil, petroleum jelly or an unknown lubricant. Replace a seal that is cracked, hardened, permanently deformed or unable to hold pressure. If resistance remains with clean undamaged parts, consult AeroPress support for the model.
