How to Clean an Apple HomePod or HomePod Mini Safely
HomePod and HomePod mini combine a woven acoustic mesh, touch surface, microphones, speaker openings, base, and power connection. Apple recommends a dry cloth for routine cleaning and allows a damp cloth only when necessary. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Stop playback and unplug HomePod
Pause audio, disconnect HomePod from power, and allow it to reach room temperature. Pull the plug by its body rather than tugging the cable. Move the speaker with clean dry hands and place it upright on a stable surface. Never clean it while connected to power or near a sink.
Step 2: Inspect for liquid or damage
Look for a wet base, frayed cable, cracked touch surface, distorted mesh, or liquid near the power connection. Routine wiping is not appropriate after a spill has entered the device. Keep it unplugged and contact Apple if liquid intrusion or electrical damage is suspected.
Step 3: Remove loose dust dry
Wipe the touch surface, mesh, and lower edge with a clean dry lint-free cloth using light pressure. A clean dry soft brush can lift loose dust from the weave, but do not jab bristles through the mesh. Do not use compressed air; Apple specifically lists it among products to avoid.
Step 4: Spot-wipe only when necessary
If a mark remains, dampen—not soak—a separate lint-free cloth with clean water and wring it thoroughly. Test a small inconspicuous area, then wipe the mark gently. Never spray water onto HomePod and never let moisture collect along the top edge, mesh openings, base, or cable connection.
Step 5: Avoid incompatible cleaners
Do not apply window cleaner, household cleaner, aerosol spray, solvent, ammonia, abrasive powder, disinfectant mist, or alcohol unless Apple publishes a model-specific exception. Those products can discolor fabric, damage the touch surface, leave acoustic residue, or carry liquid through openings.
Step 6: Clean the touch surface without pressure
Use the dry cloth first, then the controlled damp cloth only if needed. Support the speaker so it does not slide. Do not scrape dried material with a card or fingernail, and do not polish the surface with an abrasive pad. Follow immediately with the dry cloth.
Step 7: Wipe the base and inspect the shelf
Lift HomePod rather than dragging its base. Dry-wipe the base and the shelf separately. Apple notes that vibration-dampening silicone bases can leave mild marks on some waxed or oiled wood surfaces. These may disappear with time, but the furniture maker's care method—not speaker cleaner—should control treatment of the shelf.
Step 8: Clean the power cable dry
With both ends disconnected, run a dry cloth along the cable without pulling or sharply bending it. Wipe the plug body and the area around the connection dry. Do not use a wet cloth on plugs or insert anything into a connector. A damaged cable or connector requires service rather than tape or solvent cleaning.
Step 9: Let all dampness evaporate
Leave HomePod unplugged in moving room air until every wiped surface is completely dry. Keep it away from direct heat, strong sun, hair dryers, and radiators. Do not place it upside down to drain because cleaning should never introduce enough water to require draining.
Step 10: Replace and reconnect carefully
