How to Clean an AprilAire 600 Humidifier
The AprilAire 600 family is a drain-through whole-house humidifier, not a portable tank humidifier. Its mineral-loaded Water Panel is a replacement part—AprilAire specifies Water Panel number 35 annually for Models 600, 600A, and 600M—rather than a pad to scrub and reuse. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Confirm the model and replacement panel
Read the cabinet label for 600, 600A, or 600M and obtain Water Panel #35. Do not copy the frequency or part from Model 400, 500, 700, 720, 800, or HydroCore 620; their designs differ. Photograph the feed tube, distribution tray, scale-control insert, and panel orientation before disassembly.
Step 2: Shut down water and electrical operation
Set the humidifier control to Off, close the humidifier's water supply, and switch off HVAC power as the exact manual requires. Allow the furnace area to cool. Verify that water has stopped before releasing the cover. Do not work inside a running air handler or near live wiring.
Step 3: Remove the cover and water-panel assembly
Release the front cover, detach the feed tube only at the point shown in the manual, and lift out the scale-control insert assembly. Note which edge faces up and the direction of any colored mark on the panel. Support brittle plastic rather than bending old tabs.
Step 4: Discard the used Water Panel
Open the insert and remove the mineral-loaded #35 panel. AprilAire directs annual replacement for the 600 family; rinsing or descaling it does not restore designed water distribution and can leave a restrictive, uneven surface. Bag the old panel so dry mineral flakes do not spread through the mechanical room.
Step 5: Clean the scale-control insert and tray
Brush loose scale from the plastic frame and distribution tray over a basin. Rinse removable non-electrical plastic with warm water if the manual permits, using a soft nylon brush in water channels. Do not enlarge holes, scrape with metal, use strong acid, or crack the insert. Replace damaged plastic rather than forcing it back together.
Step 6: Wipe the cabinet and inspect water delivery
Wipe the accessible cabinet interior with a damp cloth and remove mineral flakes without pushing them into the HVAC duct. Inspect the feed tube and its seating. The small metering orifice controls flow; do not drill, poke, or substitute it. A kinked tube, misplaced feed tube, or broken insert can cause leaks and uneven wetting.
Step 7: Inspect the drain line
Follow the drain tubing to its approved drain and look for kinks, sagging, mineral deposits, or disconnection. AprilAire recommends yearly inspection. Clear only by the method allowed by the installation manual; do not blow contamination toward the humidifier or add harsh drain cleaner. Replace brittle or incorrectly routed tubing.
Step 8: Install the new panel in the correct direction
Place the new #35 Water Panel into the cleaned insert using the directional mark and carton instructions. Refit the distribution tray, seat the assembly without pinching it, reconnect the feed tube securely, and latch the cover. Incorrect orientation or incomplete seating can send water outside the intended path.
Step 9: Restore service and check for leaks
Open the water valve fully as the system design requires, restore HVAC power, and return the control from Off. Use the control's Test/Reset process only as its manual describes. Observe a call for humidity: water should distribute across the panel and drain freely without dripping from the cabinet or fittings.
Step 10: Stop when repair is needed
Turn the system off again for a cracked housing, leaking solenoid, damaged wiring, persistent dry panel, overflowing drain, or water entering ductwork. Those faults are not solved by extra cleaner. Record the panel date and schedule qualified HVAC service when a component, electrical test, or concealed drain correction is needed.
