How to Clean an AquaClear Power Filter

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Prepare tank water and observe the filter
During a normal water change, reserve aquarium water in a clean bucket for media rinsing. Before unplugging, note the return flow, sound and water level so you can compare performance afterward. If fish are gasping or ammonia or nitrite is elevated, protect oxygenation and troubleshoot water quality rather than leaving the filter off for a leisurely cleaning.
Step 2: Unplug before touching the intake or motor
Disconnect power and let the impeller stop. Lift off the cover and carefully remove the intake tube without pouring dirty filter water over the outlet or cord. Never run the motor dry and never put a hand into an energized aquarium appliance. Keep the motor exterior, plug and receptacle dry throughout the work.
Step 3: Lift out the basket and preserve media order
Raise the media basket slowly so debris stays in the filter body. Photograph the stack before separating foam, biological media and chemical media. AquaClear's bottom-up flow depends on correct order and open passages. Keep established biological media wet in aquarium water; do not leave it drying on a towel while the housing is cleaned.
Step 4: Rinse reusable media in aquarium water
Swish and gently squeeze the foam in the reserved tank water until heavy waste releases without trying to bleach it white. Gently rinse porous biological media in the same water. Replace carbon or other chemical media on its own schedule and avoid replacing all biological media at one service. Soap, bleach and untreated tap water can damage the bacteria that process aquarium waste.
Step 5: Brush the intake and filter housing
Use a narrow brush through the intake tube, extension and strainer, then rinse away loosened algae and sludge. Wipe the empty filter housing and waterfall lip with a soft brush and aquarium-safe water. Do not use detergent. Inspect the intake for cracks, a loose joint or a blocked strainer that could reduce flow or make priming unreliable.
Step 6: Clean the impeller, shaft and motor well
Fluval recommends cleaning the AquaClear impeller, impeller well and shaft every three months. Remove the motor or impeller assembly as the exact manual shows, then lift the impeller gently. Brush slime and mineral residue from the blades, magnet, shaft and well without scratching or losing small parts. Never pry a swollen or damaged impeller back into position.
Step 7: Rebuild and fill the housing before startup
Seat the clean impeller and motor assembly correctly, reinstall the intake and return the media stack in its photographed order. Make sure the basket sits flat and no mesh bag interferes with the lid or flow path. Fill the filter case with aquarium water before plugging it in; the AquaClear needs water in the chamber to prime and protect the motor.
Step 8: Restart, adjust flow and monitor
Reconnect power with a drip loop and watch for steady lift through the intake. Adjust flow only with the model control, not by obstructing the strainer. Listen for persistent rattling and inspect the motor seal and housing for leaks. Confirm the waterfall is stable, then monitor fish behavior and water quality after any service that disturbed substantial biological media.
