How to Clean an Aqueon QuietFlow Filter
Aqueon QuietFlow power filters combine a removable pump and magnetic impeller with mechanical and chemical cartridges, a Bio-Holster and model-dependent specialty pads or LED indicators. A clogged impeller needs physical cleaning, while established biological surfaces should not be sterilized or replaced indiscriminately. Aqueon's official pump-maintenance video shows how to remove and clean the pump, and its model manuals specify cartridge and component arrangements. Work during a partial water change so aquarium water is available for gentle biological-media rinsing, identify whether the unit is LED PRO, PRO QuietFlow, E or another QuietFlow design, and never handle the pump while it is connected to power.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Identify the QuietFlow model and media stages
Read the model label and diagram before opening the filter. Note the cartridge size, Bio-Holster, Bio-Media grid, specialty pad and pump orientation. QuietFlow internal, canister and hang-on-back models are not disassembled the same way. Photograph the media order if necessary and obtain the correct replacement cartridge before shutting the filter down.
Step 2: Prepare a partial water change
Fill a clean aquarium-only bucket with water removed from the tank. This provides a chlorine-free rinse for established biological surfaces. Keep replacement tap water treated and temperature-matched for the aquarium. Do not use a household bucket that has held soap, bleach or floor cleaner. Plan an efficient cleaning so beneficial media does not dry out.
Step 3: Unplug the filter before touching water
Disconnect the QuietFlow plug with dry hands and confirm the pump has stopped. Arrange the cord so water cannot run toward the receptacle. Lift the lid and let excess water drain into the filter, not across the wall. Never pull the unit by its cord or operate a removed pump dry to see whether it is clean.
Step 4: Remove cartridges and biological pieces in order
Lift the cartridge and holder as the manual shows, keeping the Bio-Holster or biological grid separate from disposable chemical media. Set established biological components in removed aquarium water. Replace a disposable cartridge when it is exhausted or physically deteriorated according to the model schedule; avoid changing every biological surface during the same session.
Step 5: Clean the filter body and intake
Carry the empty housing to the aquarium bucket or sink without dragging the cord through water. Wipe sludge from the reservoir, spillway and intake tube with a soft brush. Use no soap or household disinfectant. Mineral deposits on non-biological removable plastic can be treated only by an aquarium-equipment method approved for the model, then rinsed completely.
Step 6: Remove the pump and impeller
Follow Aqueon's model-specific release tab or pump-removal sequence. Take off the pump cover and impeller cover, then lift out the magnetic impeller by its supported ends. Do not bend the shaft or lose rubber end caps. Note the direction of every piece so the impeller can return without rubbing or binding.
Step 7: Brush the impeller and well
Use a small soft brush to remove slime and mineral grit from the impeller blades, magnet, shaft and well. Aqueon's maintenance material emphasizes separating and cleaning these pump parts thoroughly. Do not use a metal pick or abrasive pad. Rinse until the impeller rotates freely and no grit remains under an end cap.
Step 8: Preserve the biological stage
Swish the Bio-Holster or reusable biological grid gently in removed aquarium water only enough to release loose debris. Do not scrub it white, soak it in disinfectant or let it dry. If one biological component must be replaced, retain other established media whenever possible. The goal is restored flow without erasing the bacterial population that processes waste.
Step 9: Reassemble and prime the filter
Seat the dry-inspected impeller, cover and pump in their correct positions. Reinstall the intake, biological stage, cartridge and specialty pad in the documented flow order. Hang the filter level and fill its reservoir with aquarium water if the model requires priming. Confirm the cord has a drip loop and no water is near the outlet.
Step 10: Restart and verify flow
Plug in the filter and watch it prime. Water should move smoothly without grinding, persistent rattling or overflow around the cartridge. Check that the intake is unobstructed and the lid sits correctly. Test aquarium water on the normal schedule after significant media work and stop the pump immediately if it runs dry, leaks or fails to restart.
