How to Clean a BabyBjörn Potty Chair or Smart Potty

Step 1: Set up a bathroom-only cleaning routine

Keep the child safely away from the cleaning supplies and use a bathroom cleaning area rather than a food-preparation space. Gather a dedicated sponge or cloth so a potty-cleaning tool cannot be confused with one used for dishes. Wear gloves when handling bodily-fluid contamination, and follow any additional protective-equipment directions on the cleaner label. Check whether you have a Potty Chair or Smart Potty; both use the removable inner-bowl method. A toilet-training seat or travel insert needs its own handling instructions.

Step 2: Lift out the inner potty and empty it carefully

Remove the inner bowl from the outer shell and empty the contents into the toilet without splashing. Keep the bowl supported and avoid carrying it through the home unnecessarily. Dispose of wipes and other waste according to their labeling and local plumbing guidance rather than assuming every cleaning item is flushable. Check the underside of the bowl and the recess it sits in before putting it down. Spilled urine beneath the insert can remain unnoticed if you only look inside the bowl.

Step 3: Rinse and wash with the manufacturer's gentle method

Rinse the removable bowl under running water, then clean it using a gentle cleansing product and non-abrasive sponge, as BabyBjörn directs. Wash the rim and splash-guard area as well as the inside. Rinse away loosened waste and cleaner so the next stage is performed on a visibly clean surface. Avoid steel wool, harsh scouring powders, or an abrasive pad that could roughen the plastic. A shiny patch in the center is not enough if residue remains around the lip or underneath.

Step 4: Clean the shell and any surrounding splashes

Inspect the seat surface, outer shell, handles or armrest area where present, and the recess beneath the inner bowl. Clean soiled areas gently without forcing a tool into joins or pulling off parts that are not intended to be removed. Wipe any bathroom floor or nearby surface affected by splashing with its own appropriate method. Use a clean portion of the cloth as you work. Cleaning the removable insert alone will not solve an odor coming from trapped contamination under the bowl.

Step 5: Disinfect clean contaminated surfaces with a compatible product

The CDC's childcare hygiene guidance calls for cleaning and then disinfecting surfaces contaminated by body fluids. Choose an EPA-registered disinfectant whose label allows the surface and intended use, and confirm compatibility with BabyBjörn if unclear. Keep the surface wet for the labeled contact time, then follow any required rinsing directions before a child uses it. BabyBjörn's gentle-washing advice is not blanket approval for every disinfectant. Do not mix bleach, acids, ammonia products, or other cleaners.

Step 6: Let the pieces dry and check the fit

Allow cleaned and appropriately disinfected surfaces to dry according to the product instructions. Avoid trapping a pool of water beneath the inner bowl when you reassemble it. Check that the insert sits correctly in the shell and that the potty rests stably on the floor. Inspect for cracks, rough edges, or damage that would make thorough cleaning or comfortable use difficult. Do not use boiling water, a dishwasher, or a steam cleaner merely because another BabyBjörn feeding product has a different heat or dishwasher permission.

Step 7: Finish the surrounding hygiene tasks and repeat after use

Clean and store the dedicated cleaning tools appropriately, dispose of contaminated single-use items, and wash your hands with soap and water after removing gloves. Put chemicals out of the child's reach. Empty and clean the potty after use rather than allowing waste to sit until the end of the day. If odor persists, inspect the shell recess, underside, floor contact area, and cleaning cloth before adding more product. Childcare facilities should also follow their own required cleaning and disinfection schedule.
