Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Identify the cover family
Confirm that the cover is a BAKFlip hard-folding model and read its manual. Do not automatically apply Revolver vinyl-top treatment to a textured BAKFlip panel. Check whether the finish or hardware has been repaired, coated or replaced, because an aftermarket surface may require separate instructions.
Step 2: Park, unload and clear the top
Park in shade on level ground, close the tailgate as required and remove cargo that could be damaged by runoff. BAK instructs owners to clear foreign material, including snow and ice, before opening the cover. Lift loose leaves and grit rather than folding them into hinges.
Step 3: Rinse gently
Flush dust from the panels, working from cab toward tailgate. Use a gentle fan of water and avoid forcing a close high-pressure jet into seals, hinges, latch openings or drain-tube connections. A tonneau is water resistant rather than an invitation to direct water upward beneath its edges.
Step 4: Wash with automotive soap
Mix standard automotive soap according to its label. Use a soft sponge, mitt or cloth in straight overlapping passes, rinsing the tool often so road grit does not scratch. Work one panel at a time and keep it wet. BAK warns against harsh cleaner and abrasive products.
Step 5: Detail grooves without abrasion
Use a soft brush only where the wash mitt cannot reach around textured channels, seals and hinge lines. Do not pry at weather seals or flood latch housings. For bug residue, soften it with additional soapy water and dwell time rather than a scouring pad or solvent.
Step 6: Rinse seams and drain paths
Rinse thoroughly until water runs clear and no soap remains in panel cracks. Inspect the rail channels and drain inlets for leaves while they are visible. Remove debris by hand or with a soft brush; do not force a rigid wire into a drain tube or disconnect it without the installation guide.
Step 7: Dry without wax
BAK recommends chamois drying to maintain the finish. Blot seals and wipe broad panels with a clean chamois or microfiber towel before water spots form. Do not apply wax to BAKFlip's textured panels because BAK says it can fill cracks and crevices and affect their appearance.
Step 8: Inspect mounting and moving parts
Periodically confirm the cover is securely attached. Check clamps and front mounting bolts for loosening or misalignment, especially after rough roads or frequent use. Examine seals, hinges, latch cables and prop rods for damage. Follow the model instructions or contact BAK before tightening to an improvised torque.
Step 9: Close and road-check
Operate each fold and latch slowly, verifying both sides engage as designed and nothing is trapped. Secure the cover at every required point before driving. Stop if a panel rocks, a latch fails, a clamp has moved or a seal is displaced; washing should reveal those issues, not hide them under dressing.
