How to Clean a Bambu Lab Build Plate for Better Adhesion
Fingerprint oil, dust, old glue, and filament residue can cause a Bambu Lab print to lift even when bed temperature and first-layer settings are correct. Bambu's standard recommendation for many PEI plates is a basic sponge, dishwashing detergent, warm water, and thorough drying. However, Bambu sells multiple surfaces—including Textured PEI, Smooth PEI, and Cool Plate SuperTack—and solvent or abrasion advice is not interchangeable among them. Read the plate name printed on the flexible sheet, use soap and water as the conservative default, and check the official page for that exact surface before using alcohol, acetone, an abrasive, or another cleaner.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Read the plate name and surface instructions
Remove the flexible plate only after the printer and plate have cooled. Identify whether it is Textured PEI, Smooth PEI, Cool Plate SuperTack, or another Bambu surface. Do not decide by color alone. Bambu's plate guide lists different compatible materials, adhesives, and cleaners. SuperTack, for example, should not be cleaned with organic solvents such as acetone.
Step 2: Remove the plate without touching the print zone
Lift the sheet by its tab and edges. Skin oil can immediately re-contaminate a clean print area, so avoid placing a thumb in the center. Set the sheet on a clean counter away from metal chips and abrasive debris. If printing used both sides, remember which face needs cleaning and protect the opposite coating from scratches.
Step 3: Lift cooled plastic and thick glue residue
Wait until the sheet is cool enough for the printed part and purge lines to release normally. Use a plastic scraper at a shallow angle for remaining solid filament or a ridge of dried glue. Do not dig an edge under the coating, and do not bend the plate sharply to release a tiny stuck fragment. Water and detergent will handle film; mechanical force is for raised residue only.
Step 4: Wash with dish detergent and warm water
Wet the complete printing surface. Apply a small amount of plain dishwashing detergent to a clean basic sponge and wash the surface evenly, including corners and the area near the alignment tab. The detergent must contact the oil to lift it. Use light pressure on smooth coatings and enough gentle passes to reach the valleys of a textured plate. Avoid hand soap with moisturizers, which can leave another film.
Step 5: Rinse until water sheets cleanly
Rinse under warm running water until all foam and loosened glue are gone. A greasy patch often causes water to bead differently from the surrounding surface; wash that area again instead of rubbing it with a bare finger. Also clean residue from the plate's identification or QR marker without scratching or covering it, because some printers use that mark to identify the plate.
Step 6: Dry without reintroducing oil or lint
Let water drain from the edge, then pat or wipe the surface with a clean paper towel or a truly lint-free cloth reserved for build plates. Do not use a kitchen towel carrying fabric softener, skin oil, or cooking grease. Hold the dry plate by the edges. Inspect in reflected light for smears, droplets, fibers, or leftover adhesive.
Step 7: Clean the magnetic-bed side and seating surfaces
Dust or a filament chip beneath the flexible sheet can create a high spot that affects the first layer. With the printer cool and off, wipe the back of the plate and remove loose debris from the magnetic bed using the method in the printer's maintenance guide. Keep water away from the printer. Both surfaces must be dry before the sheet is returned.
Step 8: Reinstall in the correct orientation
Align the plate against the rear stops without dragging its coating across them. Confirm it lies flat with no corner lifted and no debris trapped beneath. Select the correct plate type in the slicer or printer. A perfectly cleaned surface paired with the wrong build-plate setting can still produce an incorrect first-layer temperature or detection warning.
Step 9: Run a controlled first-layer check
Print a familiar small first-layer test using known-good filament and settings. Watch whether adjacent lines join evenly and stay attached. If adhesion remains poor, confirm nozzle cleanliness, bed leveling, filament condition, temperature, cooling, and slicer plate selection before repeatedly scrubbing the surface. Cleaning cannot correct every first-layer fault.
Step 10: Use solvents or restoration methods only when the exact page permits them
Bambu notes that alcohol can remove some marks on certain plates, but soap and water is the more dependable way to lift grease. Other surfaces prohibit organic solvents, especially acetone. Abrasive restoration advice is likewise coating-specific and can permanently change a smooth or adhesive surface. Never transfer a textured-PEI remedy to SuperTack or another plate without explicit Bambu guidance.
