How to Clean a Bartesian Classic: Rinse Cycle, Valves, and Descaling
Syrup on a capsule seal and mineral scale inside a Bartesian need different treatments. The touchscreen Classic has a powered Rinse/Clean sequence, removable bottle valves, and a separate descaling procedure. This guide applies to that four-spirit-bottle model, not the dial-controlled Premier, Professional, or two-bottle Duet. Match your controls to the Classic manual before starting, and keep hand washing separate from the cycles that require electricity.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Identify the model and empty it thoughtfully
Use the official model-specific manual list to confirm the touchscreen Classic. Remove any used capsule once the machine is idle. For a line rinse, take off all four spirit bottles and transfer their contents into suitable clean containers; keep each spirit identified. Wash and rinse the bottles, fill them with water, fit their correct dispenser lids, and reinstall them. Fill the removable water reservoir with fresh water. Do not start cleaning with spirits still in the bottles and assume the machine will bypass them.
Step 2: Run the plain-water Rinse/Clean sequence
With the machine assembled for operation, place a container of at least 10 ounces under the dispenser. From Settings choose Rinse/Clean, then ALL, and let the machine finish and return to its main menu. Empty the catch container as needed between completed cycles. Bartesian's setup and maintenance page recommends this cleaning cycle every 30 days. This is a water flush, not the place to add dish detergent. After the powered portion is finished, disconnect power before removing parts for hands-on cleaning.
Step 3: Wash the reservoir and wipe the barcode reader
Remove the bar mat and water reservoir. Hand-wash them in hot soapy water, rinse, and air-dry. Wipe the exterior with a soft damp cloth and dry it without letting water run into the base. Lift the lid handle to reach the barcode reader and gently remove syrup or fingerprints with a damp cloth. A reader obscured by residue may fail to recognize a capsule; scratching its surface or flooding the lid is not a useful response. Do not immerse the cord, plug, or machine.
Step 4: Clean the capsule holder and removable seal
Push the capsule holder upward with both hands to remove it, keeping fingers clear of its sharp needle. Pull the removable capsule seal downward carefully; another sharp needle is inside the upper area. Wash the seal with hot soapy water, rinse, and retain it for reinstallation. The manual permits dishwashing the capsule holder and spirit bottles with dispenser lids, but this does not authorize dishwashing every removable part. Make sure the seal returns to its correct position before a drink is made; do not treat a missing seal as optional.
Step 5: Free the small duckbill valves
Remove each duckbill valve from the center of its spirit-bottle lid. Gently squeeze its mouth open to release buildup, then rinse and dry it. Inspect without pushing a pin through the opening or cutting the flexible material. Refit each valve fully onto the lid center before reinstalling a filled bottle. A bottle that leaks after washing may have an absent or misplaced valve rather than a dirty machine. Work with one lid at a time if that makes it easier to keep track of these small components.
Step 6: Descale using the Classic's exact dilution
For hard-water scale, the manual gives an interval of roughly one to two months depending on use. Mix half a cup (120 ml) of white vinegar with four cups (946 ml) of water. Divide this mixture among the four spirit bottles and reservoir, install them, and keep the capsule holder fitted. Put the catch container under the dispenser and run Settings, Rinse/Clean, ALL. Leave the mixture in the lines for 30 minutes. Do not increase the vinegar strength or substitute another acid without an applicable manufacturer instruction.
Step 7: Flush, restore the bottles, or prepare for transport
Remove and hand-wash the bottles and reservoir after the descaling wait, then rinse and fill them with fresh water. Reinstall and repeat the Rinse/Clean ALL cycle at least twice, using the catch container and fresh water as required. Empty the water from the spirit bottles and follow the manual's First Use instructions to restore normal service. For transport, use the separate Transport ALL sequence after rinsing and removing the bottles and reservoir; that drains the lines. A completed rinse alone is not the same as transport preparation.
