How to Clean a Beautyblender Makeup Sponge
A Beautyblender is open-cell foam, so foundation does not stay only on the visible surface. Cleaner has to move through the saturated sponge and back out again without twisting, scraping or tearing it. Beautyblender's official method uses water and blendercleanser, works the lather through the foam, rinses until the water runs clear and leaves the sponge exposed to air. Spot spray can remove a quick surface mark, but it is not the same as a full wash through the center. This guide covers Original, Pro and similar Beautyblender foam sponges. It also separates stubborn cosmetic staining from unsafe wear: a permanently tinted but clean sponge may still function, while a cracked, misshapen or persistently odorous sponge should be replaced.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Wash your hands and prepare a clean sink
Remove jewelry that could snag the foam and rinse cosmetic residue from your fingers. Clean the basin area so a freshly washed sponge does not touch toothpaste, hair dye or household cleaner. Use lukewarm water rather than very hot water.
Step 2: Saturate the sponge completely
Hold the Beautyblender under running water and repeatedly compress it in your palm until it expands and feels evenly wet through the center. Do not pinch with fingernails. A merely damp surface prevents cleanser from reaching foundation stored deeper in the foam.
Step 3: Work in blendercleanser
Apply liquid blendercleanser or swirl the wet sponge over the solid cleanser. Build lather by pressing and releasing the sponge between your fingers and palm. Focus on stained zones without rubbing them against a rough sink, brush mat or abrasive soap dish.
Step 4: Soak stubborn buildup when needed
For heavy residue, Beautyblender's deep-clean approach allows cleanser to work through the wet sponge before the final rinse. Place it in clean suds for the product-directed time, periodically squeezing gently. Do not mix bleach, alcohol, peroxide or several cleansers into the soak.
Step 5: Rinse from the center outward
Hold the sponge under lukewarm running water and compress it repeatedly until no foam or makeup-colored water leaves it. Rotate the sponge as you rinse. Avoid wringing it like a towel, which twists the foam and can start small tears.
Step 6: Repeat only where residue remains
If lather or liquid foundation still appears, apply another small amount of cleanser and repeat the squeeze-and-rinse cycle. Color staining does not always mean the sponge is dirty; stop aggressive cleaning once the rinse water is clear and the sponge no longer feels slick.
Step 7: Remove excess water gently
Press the clean sponge in an absorbent towel without twisting. Reshape it with light palm pressure. Inspect the surface for splits, crumbling areas or a seam-like tear that opens when compressed.
Step 8: Air-dry in the open
Set the sponge on a clean ventilated stand or mesh surface where air reaches all sides. Do not close a damp Beautyblender inside a makeup bag or solid travel case. Avoid microwave, dishwasher, clothes dryer, radiator and direct high heat. Store only after it has returned to its dry size and feels dry through the center.
