Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Switch the Betta off and lift it safely
Move the skimmer to the pool edge, switch it off, and lift it with the model's intended handle or grip points. Let water drain over the pool before carrying it to a stable work surface. Never inspect moving propellers with the unit powered. If the switch does not stop the unit, keep hands away from moving parts and follow Betta support instructions instead of attempting to disassemble the sealed body.
Step 2: Empty and rinse the debris basket
Release the basket using the latch shown in the model manual. Empty leaves and insects into trash or compost rather than washing a heavy debris load into a household drain. Rinse both sides of the fine mesh with fresh water until water passes freely. Check the basket wheel or impeller area for wrapped hair, thread, or leaf stems and remove only loose material that can be reached without prying.
Step 3: Clear the impeller and propellers
With the power still off, inspect the intake, basket wheel, propeller shafts, and guards. Pull away visible hair, string, grass, or small leaves with your fingers or a soft brush. Betta says the propellers and basket wheel should move freely by hand when the unit is off. Step 4: Wash the solar panel and body gently
Rinse loose grit first so it cannot scratch the top surface. For ordinary film, wipe the body and solar panel with a soft microfiber cloth and a mild soapy-water solution, then rinse with fresh water. Mineral or chemical residue can look like a white haze on the panel; Betta recommends a light hose spray and soft-cloth wipe. Do not scrape the panel or use a pressure washer, abrasive pad, solvent, or concentrated pool chemical.
Step 5: Wipe the front sensor lenses and edge wheels
Use a clean, damp microfiber cloth on the front sensor lenses. A film on these lenses can interfere with obstacle detection and may contribute to repeated wall contact or circling. Turn the edge-protecting wheels by hand and brush away grit around their axles. Avoid coating sensor windows with polish, wax, or water-repellent treatment because an added film can change what the sensor sees.
Step 6: Inspect before returning it to the pool
Seat the clean basket fully and confirm every latch is secure. Look for a damaged housing, cracked basket, worn propeller, loose wheel, or trapped debris. Confirm the solar panel and sensors are clear and that moving parts turn without resistance. Cleaning will not repair a damaged motor, battery, or housing; use manufacturer support if unusual noise, error lights, poor runtime, or one-sided movement continues after visible blockages are removed.
Step 7: Prepare the skimmer for off-season storage
For long storage, give the unit a final fresh-water rinse and let it dry completely. Turn the power off, empty the basket, wipe the solar panel, and store the Betta indoors in a cool, dry place away from direct sun and freezing temperatures. Leaving the basket out during storage improves airflow. Do not leave the unit where trapped water can freeze inside or around its parts.
