How to Clean a biOrb Aquarium Correctly
A biOrb is not cleaned by emptying the bowl and scrubbing everything at once. Its filtration draws water through ceramic media at the base and a replaceable service cartridge, so the media carries beneficial bacteria that should remain wet and only be rinsed gently in removed tank water. biOrb recommends removing debris and about 20 to 30 percent of the water every two weeks and replacing the filter cartridge about every four to six weeks, with timing adjusted to the aquarium. The acrylic surface also needs non-scratch pads and biOrb-compatible products rather than glass scrapers or household cleaner.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Confirm the biOrb model and plan a partial service
Identify the aquarium size, filter cartridge and light or air-pump arrangement. Review its manual and check fish condition before starting. biOrb's routine is a partial water change, not a complete teardown. Prepare the correct service kit and enough conditioned replacement water before disturbing the tank.
Step 2: Condition and temperature-match new water
Fill a clean aquarium-only container with the required volume. Add the appropriate conditioner and bring it close to tank temperature. Never use a bucket that has held detergent or chemicals. Avoid a rapid temperature or chemistry change, and do not replace more water than the maintenance situation requires without a specific aquarium-management reason.
Step 3: Disconnect electrical equipment safely
Turn off and unplug the light, air pump and other powered accessories according to their instructions. Keep plugs and adapters dry and retain a drip loop. Do not lift the aquarium by its top or work with powered components in wet hands. The fish normally remain in the aquarium for routine partial maintenance unless the exact procedure requires otherwise.
Step 4: Remove surface debris and loose decor
Net floating debris and remove only decor that blocks access. Keep wet biological pieces from drying. Inspect ornaments for sharp damage and avoid stirring the ceramic media into a cloud. Do not use soap on rocks, plants or ornaments that will return to the tank.
Step 5: Clean the acrylic with the correct pad
Use a biOrb cleaning pad or another pad specifically safe for acrylic. Work lightly on algae, supporting the bowl and keeping sand away from the pad. Do not use a metal razor, household glass cleaner, paper towel with grit or abrasive sponge. A scratched acrylic surface cannot be polished casually while fish remain inside.
Step 6: Siphon debris and 20 to 30 percent of the water
biOrb's routine guidance calls for removing debris and roughly 20 to 30 percent of the water about every two weeks. Use the gravel cleaner without churning all ceramic media. Direct waste water into the aquarium-only bucket and stop at the planned volume. Keep enough water to rinse any reusable biological material.
Step 7: Replace the service cartridge when due
Follow the model's sequence to remove the old filter cartridge, commonly on a four- to six-week schedule. Let it drain in the bucket and install the correct new service-kit cartridge without transferring packaging debris. Do not clean the powered air pump in aquarium water or force an incorrect cartridge into the base.
Step 8: Preserve the ceramic biological media
biOrb advises rinsing ceramic media with old tank water during deeper care. Swish only enough to free loose sludge; do not scrub every piece, boil it or rinse it under chlorinated water. Keep it wet and return it in the intended base arrangement. Replace only damaged or exhausted material in a way that preserves an established bacterial population.
Step 9: Refill slowly and restore the system
Pour conditioned, temperature-matched water slowly against a clean plate or the bowl side so ceramic media and fish are not blasted. Restore the normal water level, reinstall clean decor and confirm the filter base remains correctly assembled. Wipe exterior drips before reconnecting power.
Step 10: Restart and monitor water quality
Reconnect the air pump, light and other equipment with dry hands and verify steady bubbles and circulation. Check for unusual noise or a disconnected airline. Test water on the aquarium's normal schedule, especially after a cartridge change. Do not add household polish to the outside acrylic or feed extra food immediately after maintenance.
