Step 1: Find the model and unplug

Read the model number on the vacuum's rating label and open its matching BISSELL support instructions. Switch off and unplug by the plug, not the cord. Wait for the brush roll to stop. Never remove the tank, filters, hose, or soleplate while the upright is powered.

Step 2: Empty the dirt tank

Release the tank, hold it over a bin, and open its bottom or lid by the model procedure. Keep the tank upright until positioned so dust does not fall into the latch. Tap loose debris gently. Do not overfill beyond the marked line, because debris can reach the separator and filters.

Step 3: Remove and rinse the separator

Unlock the inner cyclone or separator as shown. Brush heavy dry dust into the trash, then rinse the plastic separator with warm water if the matching BISSELL instructions allow it. Do not place it in a dishwasher. Shake off excess and leave it in a ventilated area for at least 24 hours or until fully dry.

Step 4: Clean the dirt tank separately

Rinse the empty plastic tank with warm water without saturating attached seals or mechanisms not approved for washing. BISSELL support may direct owners to wipe the tank with a paper towel rather than waiting on an enclosed shape to drain. Remove all grit from sealing edges, then air-dry completely.

Step 5: Wash only the approved filters

Remove the pre-motor foam filter and any other washable filter identified for the exact model. Rinse in warm water; use a small amount of mild detergent only where BISSELL explicitly permits it, then rinse until clear. Some versions have a separate post-motor filter with different care, so never wet a paper, pleated, or non-washable filter by assumption.

Step 6: Allow a full 24-hour dry

Set the separator, tank, and washable filters in moving room-temperature air for at least 24 hours and longer if foam or crevices remain damp. Do not use a dryer, microwave, oven, radiator, or direct high heat. Reinstalling moisture can pull water into the motor and cause odor or damage.

Step 7: Clear the hose and air path

Detach the hose and extension wand at owner-release points and look through them toward a light. Push a clog only with the model-approved blunt method; do not use wire, liquid, or a sharp rod that can puncture the hose. Check the lower hose, tank inlet, and base connection before reattaching each joint tightly.

Step 8: Remove hair from the brush roll

With the vacuum still unplugged, turn it over on a stable surface and remove the soleplate by the exact fastener procedure. Cut wrapped hair along the brush roll's safe cutting groove, keeping blades away from bristles, belt, and housing. Pull fibers free and clear the end areas without removing sealed bearings.

Step 9: Inspect the belt and base

Check the belt for glazing, cracking, stretching, or breakage and verify that the brush roll turns freely when correctly seated. Use the exact BISSELL replacement belt. Brush dry debris from the base and air channel; do not wash the powered floor head. Refit the soleplate and every fastener before standing the vacuum up.

Step 10: Reassemble and test suction

Confirm filters and separator are completely dry, install them in the correct order, lock the tank, and reconnect hoses. A missing or poorly sealed component causes weak suction and dust leakage. Test briefly. If overheating, burning odor, unusual noise, or low suction remains after a clear dry air path, unplug and contact BISSELL.
