How to Clean a BISSELL PowerFresh Steam Mop
A BISSELL PowerFresh can leave streaks or reduced steam when its microfiber pad is dirty, incorrectly dried or paired with an improperly seated tank. BISSELL's support guidance says to turn the machine off, unplug it and let it cool before removing the pad. The pad can be machine-washed in warm water with liquid detergent, but bleach and fabric softener should not be used, and air-drying is recommended. For the classic 1940-family water tank, BISSELL says to use only water—never vinegar or another solution—because additives may damage the tank, gasket or other parts. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Turn off, unplug and cool completely
Stop steam through the model's control, switch it off and unplug by the plug. Stand the machine on a heat-safe surface and wait until the foot, pad and lower housing are cool. BISSELL requires power-off and unplugging before pad removal. Do not handle a saturated hot pad immediately after steaming.
Step 2: Remove the mop pad by its release tab
Use the quick-release tab or model-specific tray method so hands stay away from the soiled cleaning face. Do not pull hard on the microfiber loops or pry a hot foot. Remove a scent disc if fitted and dispose of or store it according to its directions rather than sending it through the pad wash.
Step 3: Shake and pretreat the pad without softener
Shake dry grit into the trash. Rinse heavy soil from the pad with cool water before machine washing. Do not apply chlorine bleach, fabric softener or a waxy detergent booster. BISSELL warns against bleach and softener because they can damage pad performance and contribute to streaking.
Step 4: Machine-wash warm with liquid detergent
Wash the pad in warm water using liquid laundry detergent, following BISSELL's care guidance. Keep hook-and-loop hardware and lint-heavy towels out of the load. An extra rinse can help when detergent residue is visible. Do not use a hot sanitizing cycle merely because the pad was used with steam.
Step 5: Air-dry the pad
Reshape the clean pad and hang or lay it where air reaches both sides. BISSELL recommends air-drying; dryer heat can shrink some pad edging or elastic and make attachment difficult. Do not reinstall until the thick seams and center are fully dry and free of detergent feel.
Step 6: Wipe the cool foot and body
Use a soft dry or barely damp cloth on the unplugged plastic housing. Brush accessible dry residue from the cool foot without inserting tools into steam outlets. Keep water out of controls, cord entry and internal steam passages. Never submerge the body or direct a faucet into the foot.
Step 7: Empty and inspect the water tank
Remove the tank as the manual shows and empty leftover water. Inspect the tank, cap, rubber gasket and valve for cracks or displacement. BISSELL's PowerFresh 1940 support says only water belongs in the tank and specifically warns against vinegar or other solution. Do not descale by improvising with acid.
Step 8: Dry and reseat components
Wipe the tank exterior and leave its fill opening positioned for airflow if the manual permits. Once dry, secure the cap and press the tank into the body until there is no gap. Reattach a fully dry pad evenly around the foot or tray so it cannot bunch beneath the steam outlets.
Step 9: Check for leaks before the next floor
At the next use, add clean water only, seat the tank and watch the machine on a protected hard surface during warm-up. A brief pump knock can occur while water moves, but turn off and unplug if liquid leaks, the cap is cracked, the gasket is missing or the pad does not stay secure.
