Step 1: Power off, unplug, and allow the steam system to cool

Return the machine upright, switch it off, unplug the cord, and wait until the foot and steam area are cool to the touch. Never remove the nozzle or clean the steam bar while heat is active. Note the model number before proceeding because Bissell lists separate instructions for the 3424-family Pet machines and newer Revolution HydroSteam models.

Step 2: Empty the dirty-water tank before the float shuts suction

Lift out the recovery tank, rotate its handle as directed, and remove the lid. Pour out wastewater without exceeding the MAX line during transport. Rinse inside the tank and move the float gently to verify that it is free of lint. A full tank closes the float and changes the machine sound; repeatedly operating at that point can encourage leaks and residue.

Step 3: Clean the lid, float, and red suction filter

Rinse the removable lid and wipe its sealing edge. Remove debris from the float cage without bending it. Locate the red filter beneath the recovery-tank position and lift away accessible hair with a soft dry or barely damp cloth as Bissell directs. Keep free water out of the air inlet and motor; this filter area is not a place to pour rinse water.

Step 4: Rinse the clean-water tank and receiver

Empty leftover formula, rinse the tank and cap, and inspect the bottom valve. If the removable clean-tank receiver on your model has residue, rinse that part separately and dry it before reinstalling. Do not store mixed solution in the tank or run vinegar, bleach, dish soap, laundry products, or essential oils through the pump and heater.

Step 5: Remove and flush the clear nozzle

Press both nozzle-release buttons and pull the nozzle up and away using the documented motion. Rinse it in the sink so water moves through the internal suction channel. Use the supplied clean-out tool to loosen carpet fiber at the narrow turns. Do not reach into the fixed brush-roll drive or use metal tools that could scratch the nozzle sealing edge.

Step 6: Clear the spray ports, steam ports, and steam bar

With the tanks and nozzle removed and the unit cool, use a small soft brush or cloth on the clean-water spray ports beside the suction path. Brush debris from the steam ports on either side of the foot and wipe the steam drip bar beneath the machine. Rinse the removable nozzle's black steam bar and use only the Bissell clean-out tool in its accessible passage.

Step 7: Remove debris from the brush-roll chamber

Pull loose hair and carpet fiber from the accessible chamber and ends of the brush rolls while the machine remains unplugged. Rotate the rolls only if the owner guide permits it and never cut toward a belt, seal, or bristle tuft. Brush-roll or belt removal is a separate service procedure; do not turn routine cleaning into an undocumented teardown.

Step 8: Flush and clean the accessory hose

If the hose was used, suction clean warm water through the attached tool until the returning liquid clears. Switch off and unplug, then rinse the removable tool and brush its suction opening. Wipe the hose cuff and let the hose drain. Do not submerge a fixed hose connection or force a rigid object through the hose wall.

Step 9: Wipe the exterior and dry all removable parts

Use a damp cloth on the unplugged housing and cord, keeping water out of vents and controls. Set the tanks, caps, recovery lid, nozzle, clean-out tool, and accessory tool separately on a ventilated rack. Leave the nozzle off long enough for the brush chamber to dry. Avoid ovens, hair dryers, direct heaters, and storage in freezing temperatures.

Step 10: Reassemble with the nozzle fully sealed

Install the nozzle tabs into the foot slots, rotate it into position, and press firmly on both sides until there is no gap. Reinstall the recovery lid, confirm the float moves, and click both tanks into place. If suction, spray, or steam is poor on the next run, recheck the tank seats, red filter, nozzle seal, spray openings, and steam bar before arranging service.
