How to Clean BowFlex SelectTech Dumbbells
BowFlex SelectTech dumbbells are not conventional solid weights: the handle, selection discs, plate tongues and base work as one locking system. Sweat is easy to remove, but grit inside the base can block a dial or prevent the handle from seating. BowFlex permits a cloth lightly dampened with warm water and a small amount of mild soap, followed by a dry cloth, and excludes solvents, harsh detergent, chemicals and bleach. The dumbbells are internally lubricated and are not designed for user disassembly. This guide centers on the widely owned SelectTech 552/BD552 and 1090/BD1090 families; owners should still check the manual for their exact generation before moving plates or applying the narrowly allowed silicone lubricant.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Seat the dumbbell and choose the lowest setting
Place the base on a stable floor or secured BowFlex stand. Lower the dumbbell straight into its matching base and make sure the handle is fully seated. Select the lowest weight setting on both dials so the handle can be lifted without plates. Never force a dial while the handle is outside the base.
Step 2: Inspect the locking system before cleaning
Check for a cracked plate, bent selection tongue, damaged dial, missing warning label or evidence that a dumbbell was dropped. BowFlex directs users to inspect before each use and periodically test the locking mechanism. Cleaning should stop if plates have fallen from the handle or a dial behaves abnormally.
Step 3: Mix a very mild cleaning solution
Dampen a cloth with warm water and only a small amount of mild soap, then wring it thoroughly. BowFlex says the handle assembly, plates and base may be cleaned this way. Do not substitute bleach, solvent, degreaser, harsh detergent or general-purpose chemical spray; those can degrade the product's strength or performance.
Step 4: Wipe the handle and dials
Hold the unloaded handle over a padded surface and wipe the grip, handle ends and outside of each adjustment dial. Keep moisture out of the seams and selection mechanism. Turn the handle to reach sweat underneath, then dry it immediately with a separate cloth. Do not immerse or rinse it.
Step 5: Clean plates without changing their order
With the handle out, wipe the exposed plate faces and edges in the base. If a plate must be lifted to remove dirt, handle one at a time and preserve its position and orientation. The locking tab and selection tongue must face the direction shown in the manual. A reversed plate can block the handle or prevent secure selection.
Step 6: Remove debris from the base
Use a dry soft brush and cloth to remove grit from empty support slots. For stuck residue, use the barely damp soapy cloth and dry the slot fully. Do not flood the base, use compressed air that drives debris into the mechanism, or take the base assembly apart. BowFlex identifies debris in the base as one cause of a dial that will not turn.
Step 7: Do not add routine lubricant
The handle is internally lubricated and needs no additional internal oil. Plate-to-selection-disc contact normally also needs no lubricant. Only if the manual's specified surfaces genuinely require it may a small amount of food-grade silicone lubricant be used. Do not apply petroleum oil, penetrating spray or grease, and never lubricate to mask a jam.
Step 8: Reassemble and test each selection
Return every plate to its original slot and direction. Seat the handle fully, rotate both dials through the settings and listen for the click at each increment. Select a low weight, lift the handle a few inches and verify that the intended plates are secure. Repeat the manual's locking-mechanism test on both ends.
Step 9: Keep the set dry and supported
Dry all components before storing the handle in the base. Keep the set indoors in a temperature- and humidity-controlled area, away from pool chemicals and floor moisture. Do not drop or bang the dumbbells together. If a cleaned dial still sticks, contact BowFlex rather than forcing or disassembling it.
