How to Clean and Delime a BUNN Speed Brew

A BUNN Speed Brew keeps water hot in an internal tank, so routine washing, deliming the sprayhead tube and periodic vinegar cleaning are separate jobs. BUNN's Speed Brew manual calls for washing the brew funnel and glass carafe after use, clearing the sprayhead tube about every three months—up to twice monthly with hard water—and performing a deeper cleaning at least every three months. Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Turn off the tank, unplug and cool

Move the vacation or tank switch to Off as the model manual shows, unplug the brewer and let it cool for as long as two hours. The internal reservoir can hold near-brewing-temperature water even when no cycle is running. Do not remove the sprayhead or insert a tool while the brewer is hot or energized.

Step 2: Wash the funnel and carafe routinely

Remove the brew funnel and discard the filter and grounds. Wash the funnel and glass carafe after use with warm water, mild nonabrasive dish soap and a soft sponge, or place approved pieces on the dishwasher's top rack. Rinse and dry. Follow separate manual instructions for a thermal carafe; never use an abrasive pad on coatings or markings.

Step 3: Wipe the brewer without wetting its openings

Use a soft damp cloth on the exterior, warming plate when present and the area above the funnel. Wring the cloth well around switches and seams. Do not immerse the brewer, spray cleaner into the pour-in opening or dismantle its housing. Wipe soap away with a second damp cloth and leave the machine unplugged.

Step 4: Remove and inspect the cooled sprayhead

After the full cooling period, unscrew the sprayhead by hand and set it aside. Look for mineral crust around its holes. The manual recommends deliming the sprayhead tube about every three months, and as often as twice a month where hard water causes slow or irregular flow. Keep the brew funnel out during this procedure.

Step 5: Delime the sprayhead tube

Insert the official deliming tool into the sprayhead tube until roughly two inches remain visible. Slide it in and out five or six times to loosen deposits, without forcing it sideways or substituting a sharp wire. Remove the tool. Pour a carafe of fresh cold water into the brewer so loosened particles flush from the open tube.

Step 6: Clear and wash the sprayhead

Use a wooden toothpick to loosen scale from each sprayhead hole, working gently so the openings are not enlarged. Wash the sprayhead with mild soap and water, rinse it thoroughly and inspect against light. Screw it back on only after the flushing water has passed and the holes are clear.

Step 7: Start the quarterly vinegar cleaning

For the manual's deeper cleaning, leave the sprayhead installed initially and pour one quart—32 fluid ounces—of plain white vinegar into the brewer. Place the carafe and funnel correctly so any displaced liquid is captured. After the liquid cycle finishes, turn the tank switch Off, unplug and let the vinegar remain in the cooled system for at least two hours.

Step 8: Flush until vinegar is gone

After soaking, remove and clean the sprayhead again as needed. Pour a full carafe of fresh cold water through the brewer and discard the output. Repeat at least three times, or until no vinegar odor remains, keeping the carafe positioned for every flush. Do not mix vinegar with bleach, commercial descaler or another chemical.

Step 9: Reassemble, heat and test

Confirm the deliming tool is removed, the clean sprayhead is secure and the funnel and carafe are correctly seated. Plug in, turn the tank switch On and allow about 15 minutes for water to heat before a plain-water test. If flow is still slow, spray is uneven or the brewer leaks, stop and use BUNN support rather than opening the housing.
