How to Deep-Clean a CatGenie A.I.
A CatGenie A.I. is a plumbed, self-washing cat box with reusable granules, a processing unit, water supply, drainage path, hopper impeller and optical light guide. Its deep clean is therefore closer to appliance service than washing a litter pan. CatGenie recommends taking the unit apart and cleaning it at least twice per year, in addition to running its scheduled maintenance cycle. The critical details are retracting the GenieArm before lifting the brim, keeping track of the GenieBall and drainage washer, clearing hair from the impeller and seeping holes, orienting the mesh water filter correctly and hand-tightening the plastic hose nut. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Isolate power, water and the cat
Provide another litter box, unplug the CatGenie, turn off its water supply and move the unit away from the wall. Place towels beneath connections because the intake hose may contain clean water. Never disassemble the processing unit while power or water remains on.
Step 2: Remove the processing unit and protect the GenieArm
Lift off the hopper cover and place the processing unit upright on a towel. Pull the GenieArm down gently, release the GenieHand with its square tab and retract the arm fully into the brim opening. CatGenie emphasizes this step so the arm is not bent while the brim is removed.
Step 3: Lift the brim, granule bowl and hopper
Use the black button for leverage and lift the brim from back to front, keeping clear of the retracted arm. Remove the bowl of granules and store it where cats cannot use it. Pull the hopper straight up from the base without twisting ports or losing small components.
Step 4: Open and clean the hopper
Work over a garbage bag and open the hopper like a book. Keep track of the GenieBall. Remove or carefully cut hair from the impeller shaft and blades, confirm the impeller spins freely and verify the hair-cutter rings remain in place. Clear the seeping holes on both sides without enlarging them.
Step 5: Clean the drainage-washer area
Remove the red or gray drainage washer and place it where it cannot be lost. Clear debris from the washer and its recessed seat, including the interior passage. Refit the washer and return the GenieBall to the hopper. Missing or misseated pieces can cause drainage and operating trouble after reassembly.
Step 6: Rinse and orient the mesh water filter
Unscrew the intake hose from the back of the processing unit and use pliers as CatGenie shows to remove the mesh filter. Rinse it in a cup or under a faucet. Reinsert it with the plastic nub facing away from the unit, reconnect the hose and hand-tighten the plastic nut—do not use tools for tightening.
Step 7: Wipe the optical light guide
With the hopper cover and processing unit still removed, pull the two-crystal-shaped light guide upward from the base. Wipe the entire piece with a soft cloth, concentrating on the angled sides of the tip. Do not scratch, coat or reinstall it with film remaining on the optical surfaces.
Step 8: Reassemble and leak-test
Return the light guide, hopper, granule bowl, brim, GenieHand, processing unit and cover in CatGenie's order. Turn on the water before restoring power and inspect the hand-tightened hose connection for leaks. Plug in only when dry, then run the prescribed cycle and confirm water, scooping, drainage and drying operate normally.
