How to Clean Chilewich Floor Mats: Woven vs. Shag

Step 1: Identify woven, Shag or another product

Read the product label or order description before choosing a method. Woven floor mats have a different construction from the textured Shag line, while installed flooring has separate maintenance requirements. Chilewich's care page groups those instructions by product. Move nearby furniture without dragging it across the textile and inspect the mat's edges. If the backing is separating or a corner is damaged, address that problem before operating a cleaning machine over it. Photograph the affected area for support if needed.

Step 2: Remove grit before adding moisture

Sweep, vacuum or shake out loose debris from a woven rug. Shag mats can also be vacuumed or shaken to release dirt lodged in the texture. Work over an appropriate collection area, not across a freshly cleaned floor. Lift the mat and remove grit underneath it as well. A flat-looking surface can still conceal abrasive particles between the backing and floor. Keep the vacuum moving and watch the edges rather than letting a powerful nozzle pull a corner into the machine.

Step 3: Blot fresh spills on either floor product

Use a damp lint-free cloth and blot promptly. Work from the outside of the spill toward its center so the wet area does not spread needlessly. Pick up solid food before wiping the remaining mark. For a persistent stain, test a compatible spot cleaner on a hidden area and inspect the dry result. Do not apply the much stronger recipes listed for Chilewich placemats to a floor rug. The location of a cleaning instruction within a multi-product care page matters as much as its brand name.

Step 4: Use the woven-rug deep-cleaning route when needed

For woven rugs, current Chilewich guidance allows a residential carpet cleaner or surface mopping and recommends hot-water extraction with mechanical brushing for deeper cleaning. It names equipment such as the Bissell Big Green and specific Rug Doctor machines. That permission belongs to the woven floor product, not every Chilewich item or the floor beneath it. Follow both the rug and machine instructions, test compatibility and plan drying before starting. If the backing, installation or floor cannot tolerate the process, arrange an appropriate off-floor cleaning method.

Step 5: Hand wash Shag mats instead of borrowing the woven method

Chilewich describes hosing off Shag mats for loose dirt and hand washing with water and gentle detergent for deeper cleaning. Use an area where runoff can be handled without leaving a slippery walkway. Rinse away detergent and hang the mat to dry as directed. Do not put a Shag mat into a washing machine simply because it can be hosed. Its flexible construction and permitted water exposure do not mean it is designed for a spinning drum or heated drying cycle.

Step 6: Dry the mat and the floor separately

After wet cleaning, lift the mat so its face and backing can dry. Clean the exposed floor with the method approved for that floor, then allow it to dry completely too. Check the underside rather than relying on the top feeling dry to your hand. Returning a damp mat can trap moisture out of sight, especially under furniture or in a humid entryway. Chilewich also recommends occasionally lifting and airing mats during normal use, even when there has not been a major spill.

Step 7: Avoid chemical and storage damage

Chilewich excludes acetone, Pine-Sol and citrus-based cleaning agents for these floor products; do not use them to chase a stain. Neither woven rugs nor Shag mats belong in a washing machine. Woven rugs should not be ironed, and they are rolled with the woven face outward for storage. Do not leave a crease under a heavy stack or treat a tripping edge with improvised high heat. Review the current product instructions for a persistent crease. A clean mat still needs to lie securely and leave the floor beneath it dry.
