How to Clean Comotomo Bottles and Protect the Nipple Vents
Comotomo bottles are washed fully disassembled, with particular care around the nipple's delicate vents. Use warm soapy water after each feed, rinse thoroughly, and inspect before reuse. The brand permits top-rack dishwashing and compatible sterilizers, but those options do not remove the need to identify damage or leftover milk. This guide covers the standard silicone bottle and nipple system; follow current package instructions for any revised or special accessory.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Disassemble before the first wash
Wash your hands and separate the cap, collar, nipple, and bottle body using the normal assembly connections. Put the pieces in a basin reserved for feeding items instead of a dirty sink. Check the parts before cleaning a new set, and inspect used parts for tears or deformation. A wide bottle opening makes hand access easier but does not mean a quick rinse reaches the underside of an assembled nipple. Keep small components away from children while they are separated.
Step 2: Wash the bottle body after every feed
Empty leftover feed according to your feeding guidance and wash the body in warm soapy water. Work around the bottom, inner walls, and threaded neck to remove milk residue. Use gentle contact rather than abrasive pads or a rough tool that can mark the surface. Refresh dirty wash water and keep washed pieces apart from used ones. Cleaning promptly is more useful than relying on a long later soak to remove a dried film that could have been washed away easily.
Step 3: Clean nipple vents gently by hand
Wash the nipple and its delicate vents with your hands as Comotomo recommends, not by forcing a brush into them. Look for trapped milk around the nipple base and vent areas. Do not insert pins, enlarge an opening, or cut a slit to correct a suspected blockage. A vent problem and an unsuitable flow nipple are not the same issue. If a part remains distorted or damaged after gentle cleaning, replace it rather than modifying it to change feeding behavior.
Step 4: Wash collars and caps, then rinse everything
Clean the separate collar and cap as well as the silicone pieces, paying attention to grooves and surfaces that touched milk. Rinse each component thoroughly with clean water until no soap remains. Inspect clear rinse water and the actual part; an apparently clear basin does not prove a hidden fold is clean. The manufacturer excludes solvents and harsh chemicals. Do not add fragrance, essential oils, or an unrelated cleaner to mask an odor without removing its source.
Step 5: Choose a permitted additional hygiene method
For first use, Comotomo calls for washing and about three minutes in boiling water, using tongs to keep rings and caps from contacting the hot pot bottom. It also permits top-rack dishwashing and microwave, steam, or electric sterilizers. Follow the sterilizer's instructions for water, loading, and cooling; microwave compatibility is not permission to microwave dry loose parts. For the frequency needed by your child, use appropriate infant-feeding guidance rather than assuming every family needs the same schedule.
Step 6: Air-dry on a clean surface
Place disassembled parts where air can circulate and avoid sealing moisture inside a cap or bottle. Do not wipe milk-contact surfaces with a used kitchen towel. The CDC's infant-feeding-item guidance explains dedicated washing equipment, thorough air drying, and extra sanitizing considerations for younger or medically vulnerable infants. Clean the basin and drying equipment too. A bottle can be recontaminated after washing if placed on a dirty counter or stored while wet.
Step 7: Inspect and rebuild without forcing the nipple
Before the next feed, inspect the nipple and bottle for wear, remaining residue, and damage. Assemble according to the supplied instructions, ensuring the nipple sits correctly in its collar rather than being twisted or trapped unevenly. Check the fit without over-tightening to compensate for a damaged seal. If leaking or nipple collapse persists, consult Comotomo about the model and symptoms. Do not assume repeated high-heat treatment will resolve a mechanical fitting or ventilation problem.
