How to Clean and Maintain a Concept2 RowErg
A Concept2 RowErg collects two very different kinds of debris: sweat and skin oil on the contact surfaces, and dark residue where the seat rollers travel on the monorail. The machine also has a chain that needs oil rather than cleaner and a flywheel that needs dry dust removal rather than spray. Concept2 separates care by interval—after use, every 50 hours and every 250 hours—so a productive cleaning session must keep water away from the monitor and chain, avoid corrosive chemicals, and leave the rail smooth without coating it in lubricant. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Power down and inspect before cleaning
Finish the workout, let the flywheel stop and remove the Performance Monitor batteries only if the monitor will be handled extensively. Look for a loose monitor arm, damaged handle cord, rough seat movement, sagging chain on recovery or missing fasteners. Cleaning is not a repair for a frayed cord, cracked part or abnormal bearing noise.
Step 2: Wipe the handle, seat and frame after use
Use a cloth lightly dampened with mild soapy water. Wipe the handle, seat, foot stretchers and frame areas touched by hands or sweat. Apply liquid to the cloth rather than spraying the machine, especially near the monitor, flywheel opening and chain slot. Follow with a dry cloth so moisture does not remain around bolts or under the foot straps.
Step 3: Clean the monorail every day
Move the seat to expose the full stainless-steel track. Wipe the rail from end to end with soap and water or glass cleaner. Concept2 permits a non-abrasive scouring pad for accumulated black residue. This residue is normally dirt and polymer transferred from the rollers, not metal damage. Do not wax or oil the rail; a film attracts grit and can change the seat feel.
Step 4: Clean the seat rollers and underside
Tip the RowErg only as its manual allows and wipe the rolling surfaces with a damp cloth while turning each roller by hand. Remove compacted debris without a blade or metal pick that could flatten or score the roller. Clean the underside of the seat and rail ledges, then return the machine to the floor and confirm the seat travels quietly without a bump.
Step 5: Oil the chain every 50 hours
Pull the handle until about a foot of chain is exposed and protect the rail and floor with a towel. Put roughly a teaspoon of Concept2-approved oil on a cloth or directly along the chain, then move the handle slowly so the oil reaches the links. Wipe off excess. Do not use WD-40, penetrating spray, chain cleaner or vegetable oil, and do not soak the chain.
Step 6: Remove dust from the flywheel screen
Vacuum the outside mesh and damper openings with low suction and a soft attachment. Keep the nozzle from striking the fan vanes or Performance Monitor cable. Surface dust can be removed whenever it is visible; the deeper 250-hour cleaning requires opening the enclosure according to the exact model instructions.
Step 7: Perform the 250-hour flywheel cleaning
Follow Concept2's illustrated procedure to remove only the specified enclosure sections. Vacuum lint from the screen and interior without bending fan vanes or disturbing balance weights. Do not introduce water, aerosol cleaner or lubricant. Reinstall every screw in its original location and make sure the damper moves freely before rowing.
Step 8: Check fasteners and chain condition
At the same interval, inspect and tighten accessible screws as the manual directs. Examine the chain for stiff links, rust or continuing roughness after oiling. A chain that skips, a shock cord that no longer retracts correctly, or a noisy bearing needs troubleshooting or replacement rather than more cleaning.
Step 9: Dry, test and store correctly
Allow contact surfaces to air-dry, reinstall monitor batteries if removed and row gently for several strokes. The seat should glide smoothly, the chain should return without sagging and the monitor should remain dry and responsive. Store indoors away from standing water and corrosive pool chemicals; separate the frame only in the manner Concept2 specifies.
