How to Clean a Cricut Cutting Mat by Grip Type

A cutting mat that stops holding cardstock does not automatically need more adhesive. Dust and cut fibers can cover the existing coating, while a worn or damaged mat may need replacement. The important first decision is the mat type: Cricut permits gentle wet cleaning for blue, green and purple machine mats, but its pink FabricGrip mat needs a dry method. This guide covers those four adhesive cutting mats, not heat-press pads or every specialty mat. It keeps cleaning, drying and the decision to replace a mat separate from troubleshooting the cutting machine.

What you will need

  • The mat's printed grip name and original protective sheet
  • Tweezers and a clean, non-abrasive sponge
  • Warm water and a few drops of degreasing dish soap for approved mats
  • Alcohol-free, lotion-free, oil-free and fragrance-free wipes for light cleaning
  • Transfer tape for the pink FabricGrip method

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Identify the grip before introducing moisture

Read the printed name rather than assuming every sticky Cricut accessory can be washed. Blue LightGrip, green StandardGrip and purple StrongGrip belong to the wet-cleanable group in Cricut's mat-cleaning instructions. Pink FabricGrip does not. Keep an unidentified or specialty mat dry until its instructions are confirmed. Place the mat on a clean, flat work surface away from the machine so rinse water and loose fibers cannot enter its rollers or sensors.

Step 2: Unload the mat and lift the larger scraps

Finish or cancel the cutting job and unload normally. Remove the project and use tweezers to pick up loose threads and small offcuts without digging through the adhesive. Look across the surface in good light: separate obvious debris from cuts in the mat itself. Cleaning removes contamination, not physical gouges or curling edges. Support the entire mat while working rather than sharply folding it to make every scrap release. Keep fingers on its uncoated edges wherever possible.

Step 3: Use a light wipe only on the approved colors

For light dust on blue, green or purple mats, use an alcohol-free wipe without lotion, oil or fragrance. Work gently in small circles; heavy pressure is not needed to grind the dirt out. Turn to a clean area of the wipe as it collects debris rather than redistributing the same fibers. Leave the mat uncovered to air-dry before testing the adhesive. Do not take a wet surface's temporarily different feel as evidence that it needs stronger chemicals or a new layer of glue.

Step 4: Wash a heavily soiled blue, green or purple mat

Rinse the approved mat with warm water, add a few drops of degreasing dish soap and work over it with a soft, non-abrasive sponge. The aim is to lift the film lying on top of the adhesive, not scrub the coating away. Rinse until no detergent remains. Keep the mat supported and avoid a prolonged soak or a rough scouring pad. More soap means more rinsing, so start small. Stop if the coating is visibly lifting instead of treating the change as stubborn dirt.

Step 5: Keep the pink FabricGrip procedure dry

Use tweezers to remove visible lint and threads from the pink mat, then lightly press transfer tape against the remaining fibers and lift it away. Do not scrub, rinse or soak this mat. Avoid pressing bare fingers repeatedly into its coated area while checking your progress. Work in small sections so you can see what the tape is lifting, and stop when the loose fibers are gone. A water-based method that succeeds on StandardGrip is not an equivalent shortcut for FabricGrip.

Step 6: Air-dry and make a controlled grip check

Let washed mats dry completely without wiping the adhesive with a towel, which can leave new lint. Do not load a damp mat into the machine. Once dry, test with an inexpensive scrap appropriate to that mat's grip strength and press it down evenly. If it slips, first confirm that the material and mat are a suitable pairing. A clean mat can still have exhausted adhesive; repeatedly washing an already clean surface will not repair that wear.

Step 7: Store correctly and recognize the replacement point

Put the original protective sheet back over a clean, dry mat and store it flat. Remove scraps after projects and give it light attention every few projects rather than waiting for a thick fiber layer. Cricut warns against third-party adhesive sprays and glue pens because they can affect warranties and the machine. Temporary edge taping is not a repair for a warped mat. Replace a mat whose shape, coating or holding ability is no longer reliable after appropriate cleaning.

Specific cleaning questions

Open a question for a concise answer about stains, odors, safety, frequency, and troubleshooting.

Can I wash a pink Cricut FabricGrip mat?
No. Cricut's current instructions keep FabricGrip dry: lift fibers with tweezers and transfer tape. The soap-and-water method applies to blue LightGrip, green StandardGrip and purple StrongGrip mats.
Can I use baby wipes on a Cricut mat?
For the approved blue, green and purple mats, choose wipes without alcohol, lotion, oil or fragrance. Allow complete air drying. A wipe's name alone does not establish that its ingredients are suitable.
Does dish soap make a mat sticky again?
It can remove debris covering usable adhesive on the approved mat types. It does not replace adhesive that has worn away. Judge the result after rinsing and complete drying, not while the mat is wet.
Can I dry the sticky side with a towel?
Cricut advises air drying because a towel can deposit lint on the adhesive. Leave the surface exposed in a clean area, then replace the protective sheet once it is fully dry.
Should I add spray adhesive to an old mat?
Cricut does not recommend third-party adhesive sprays or glue pens. A replacement mat is the reliable option when correct cleaning no longer restores usable grip or when the mat is physically damaged.
Why does paper still tear on a clean mat?
The wrong grip strength or project-removal method may be involved. Cleanliness is only one factor. Check the material's recommended mat and machine settings rather than weakening a clean mat with repeated washing.
How often should I clean a cutting mat?
Remove visible scraps after use and do light cleaning every few projects as needed. Fiber-heavy material may require more frequent attention. A deep wash is for accumulated contamination on an approved mat.
Do these directions cover Cricut heat-press mats?
No. Heat-press pads, specialty mats and adhesive machine mats are different products. Use the care instructions for the printed product name instead of transferring this washing method to another accessory.
