Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Cancel the job and unplug
Unload the mat or Smart Material using the machine controls, turn the Maker 3 off and unplug its power and USB cables. Let the carriage stop before reaching inside. Remove installed pens or tool housings only by their normal clamp releases. Never move a powered carriage by hand.
Step 2: Remove loose scraps from the bed
Lift paper curls, vinyl slivers and backing fragments from the material path with dry fingers or tweezers. Work away from sensors and rubber rollers. Do not scrape the bed, push debris under a roller or run a sticky cleaning sheet through the machine. Inspect Smart Material scraps before they become wrapped around a bar.
Step 3: Clean the material sensors
The Maker 3 material sensors sit near the left side of the machine. Cricut's troubleshooting guidance allows compressed air or microfiber to remove dust. Use brief upright bursts directed so debris leaves the machine, or touch the accessible surface with clean dry microfiber. Do not soak, scrape or bend a sensor.
Step 4: Dust the Print Then Cut sensor
Locate the cut sensor according to Cricut's illustration. Sweep its accessible window gently with a small clean dry watercolor brush. Do not use liquid, alcohol, a cotton swab that can shed fibers or compressed air at close range. Persistent calibration or mark-reading problems may need Cricut's lighting and print-quality troubleshooting rather than more cleaning.
Step 5: Inspect tool and blade housings
Remove the housing through the clamp and keep fingers away from exposed cutting edges. Use a clean soft brush to clear dust from the housing and gear area as Cricut advises for Knife Blade. Remove visible material from a blade only with the method approved for that blade. Do not oil the housing or take apart a bonded mechanism.
Step 6: Check the roller bar without adjusting it
Inspect the roller bar and rubber star wheels for material residue. Remove only loose accessible debris while the machine is unplugged. Do not force a roller sideways, cut against the bar or strip the light grease from the carriage shaft. Cricut notes that some grease on the shaft is necessary; an unusual roller position or repeating feed fault belongs in model-specific troubleshooting.
Step 7: Clear the mat safely
Use tweezers to lift fibers and cut pieces from the mat without gouging its surface. Support the mat flat and avoid bending it sharply. Do not improvise washing or adhesive-restoration methods that Cricut has not approved for that mat. Replace a warped, deeply cut or unreliable mat rather than compensating with excess pressure.
Step 8: Wipe the exterior
Use dry microfiber on the lid, controls and housing. For a stubborn mark on the hard exterior, Cricut's general machine-care guidance says to put glass cleaner on the cloth, never directly on the machine; keep that cloth away from sensors, rollers, seams and the interior. Never use acetone.
Step 9: Reinstall and run a controlled test
Confirm that no tool, scrap or wet area remains. Reinstall the correct dry housing and close its clamp, reconnect power and use an inexpensive test material. If feeding, sensor reading or carriage motion remains abnormal, stop and follow Cricut's Maker-series troubleshooting or contact support instead of disassembling or realigning the machine.
