How to Clean a De'Longhi Magnifica Evo

The De'Longhi Magnifica Evo grinds beans, compresses coffee in a removable infuser, and—on LatteCrema versions—moves milk through a detachable carafe. Those systems require different care. Grounds and coffee oils collect around the infuser, bin, tray, chute, and spouts; milk residue needs prompt carafe cleaning; mineral scale is removed only by the guided EcoDecalk program. Magnifica Evo ECAM29X.6Y and ECAM29X.8Y instructions are similar but accessories vary, so match the model label before removing or washing a part.

What you will need

  • De'Longhi EcoDecalk descaler
  • Fresh water
  • A container holding at least 2 liters
  • Mild dish soap for approved removable parts
  • A soft cloth and small soft brush
  • The exact Magnifica Evo manual
  • Food-safe De'Longhi care products only where the manual specifies them

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Let the automatic rinses do their job

Keep a vessel or the drip tray beneath the coffee spouts when the machine starts and shuts down, because it automatically rinses. Empty the tray when its red level indicator rises. Do not switch off at a power strip before the machine completes its own shutdown; proper shutdown moves the infuser into the removal position.

Step 2: Empty the grounds bin and drip tray correctly

When prompted, remove the drip tray with the grounds container, empty both, and wash them with warm water and mild soap if approved by the manual. Clean the condensate tray and tray grid as well. Reinsert the empty grounds container while the machine is on when the prompt requires it, or the counter may not reset correctly.

Step 3: Clean the coffee spouts and pre-ground funnel

Switch the machine off with its control, unplug after shutdown, and cool it. Wipe the twin coffee-spout openings with a soft cloth and clear visible deposits gently without pushing tools into tubing. Inspect the pre-ground coffee funnel and brush out dry loose coffee as directed. Never pour water, cleaner, or beans into the pre-ground chute.

Step 4: Rinse the removable infuser with water only

At least monthly—or more often with heavy use—shut the machine down fully, remove the water tank, open the service door, and press the colored infuser-release buttons. Soak the infuser in lukewarm water for about five minutes, rinse it under water, and brush away residue. De'Longhi says not to use detergent or a dishwasher. Reinsert it until the PUSH mark clicks.

Step 5: Clean the LatteCrema carafe after milk

After a milk drink, run the milk system's Clean function with a cup beneath the outlet. Refrigerate or discard remaining milk as food-safety guidance requires. Regularly disassemble the lid, intake tube, milk spout, adjustment dial, and container exactly as the manual shows. Wash approved pieces with hot water and mild soap or the dishwasher rack specified by De'Longhi, clear the channels, rinse, dry, and reassemble.

Step 6: Wash the tank and wipe the bean area

Remove the water filter when its replacement or descaling is due. Wash the water tank by hand and rinse it well. Empty the bean hopper before wiping it with a dry cloth; do not introduce water into the grinder. Never adjust, dismantle, or lubricate the internal grinder unless the user manual specifically instructs it.

Step 7: Run the guided EcoDecalk cycle

When the red descale light appears, allow about 30 minutes. Remove the water filter and empty the drip tray. Pour 100 milliliters of EcoDecalk to level A, then add water to level B—about one liter. Place a 2-liter container under the coffee and hot-water outlets, hold the descale control for five seconds, and follow the ECAM29X.6Y or ECAM29X.8Y prompts. The first stage takes about 15 minutes.

Step 8: Complete both rinse stages

The supported Magnifica Evo process includes two rinses. Empty the container carefully, rinse the tank, refill it with fresh water, and continue whenever prompted. Do not interrupt the full cycle or reinstall the filter prematurely. When complete, wash the tray, refill with fresh water, install a prepared filter if used, and confirm that the warning has cleared.

Specific cleaning questions

Open a question for a concise answer about stains, odors, safety, frequency, and troubleshooting.

Can the Magnifica Evo infuser go in the dishwasher?
No. De'Longhi instructs owners to soak it briefly in lukewarm water and rinse with water only—no detergent and no dishwasher. Let it drain, then reinstall it until the PUSH mark clicks.
Why can't I remove the infuser?
It may not be in its parked position. Turn the machine on if needed, then shut it down using its own control and wait for the sequence to finish before unplugging. Never force the infuser out.
How often should I clean the LatteCrema carafe?
Run the carafe Clean function after milk use and perform the full disassembly and wash regularly as the manual directs. Milk residue should not remain at room temperature in tubes, the spout, or lid channels.
Can I descale a Magnifica Evo with vinegar?
No. De'Longhi instructs owners to use EcoDecalk and warns against vinegar. Use 100 milliliters to tank level A plus water to level B for the referenced ECAM29X process.
How long does Magnifica Evo descaling take?
Allow about 30 minutes for the complete process, including the solution stage and two rinses. The first active stage is about 15 minutes. Do not interrupt it even during pauses.
Why is the grounds-bin warning still on after I emptied it?
The machine may not have registered the removal while powered, or the bin may have been reinserted incorrectly. Follow the on-machine prompt and manual sequence, empty the tray and bin together, and seat them fully.
Can I clean the grinder with water?
No. Keep water and soap out of the hopper and grinder. Empty beans and wipe accessible user-serviceable areas dry. Seek support for an internal blockage rather than opening the grinder.
Does a water filter eliminate descaling?
No. A compatible filter can reduce some scale and change the interval, but the machine can still request descaling. Remove the filter before EcoDecalk and replace or reinstall it only as the manual directs afterward.
