Once dry, apply an O-ring/X-ring-safe lubricant according to its label, again working with the drivetrain stationary and moving to the next section only by hand. External lubrication remains useful on a sealed chain; the rings do not eliminate the need to maintain its exposed surfaces. Is a wire chain brush a good way to remove rust?

Why does fresh lubricant fling onto the wheel?
