How to Clean Exo Terra Terrarium Glass
Misting systems and water dishes can leave hard mineral rings on Exo Terra terrarium glass, doors and other smooth surfaces. Exo Terra's Terrarium Glass Cleaner is a gel intended for glass, plastic and similar smooth surfaces: apply it with a dry clean cloth, let it react for a few minutes, work the deposit gently, rinse with water and dry. That mineral-removal process is not the same as disinfecting an animal enclosure, and the gel should not be spread onto substrate, porous wood, plants or an animal. Move the inhabitant to a secure species-appropriate temporary enclosure and protect all habitat equipment before working.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Move the animal and identify the surface
Transfer the reptile or amphibian to a secure temporary enclosure with the required temperature and ventilation. Confirm whether the panel is glass, plastic or acrylic and note any factory coating or background film. Exo Terra's gel is intended for smooth surfaces, but scratch sensitivity differs. Never clean around a loose animal or apply a product where it can be licked, inhaled or tracked through wet residue.
Step 2: Power down and protect habitat systems
Switch off and unplug lights, heaters, foggers, pumps and misting equipment according to their shutdown instructions. Let hot fixtures cool. Remove water dishes, food, loose decor and any plant that could catch cleaner. Cover or remove substrate near the work area. Do not spray water toward sockets, thermostats, probes or cable openings.
Step 3: Remove loose soil before treating deposits
Wipe dry dust, shed skin and substrate from the panel and door tracks with a clean cloth or soft brush. Lift loose material instead of grinding it across the viewing surface. Remove large droplets with a separate cloth. This exposes the mineral ring and keeps grit from becoming an abrasive slurry under the gel.
Step 4: Test a concealed smooth area
Apply a tiny amount of the Exo Terra gel to an inconspicuous part of the same surface. Follow the waiting and rinse directions, then check for haze, softening or finish change after drying. Do not use the gel on porous rock, cork, wood, foam backgrounds, untreated metal or a printed surface unless its product instructions confirm compatibility.
Step 5: Apply the gel with a dry clean cloth
Exo Terra directs users to place the gel on a paper towel or dry clean cloth and apply it to glass, plastic or another smooth surface. Work a small section and keep the product from running into silicone seams, locks, vents and substrate. Do not atomize it into the enclosure or mix it with vinegar, bleach or another cleaner.
Step 6: Let the product react for a few minutes
Leave the gel on the mineral deposit for the time stated by Exo Terra, generally a few minutes. Keep the surface supervised so the product does not dry hard or migrate. Longer is not automatically better. If the deposit is on a door, keep the door stable so it cannot swing, drip or put pressure on its hinge.
Step 7: Work the stain gently from outside inward
Use the clean cloth in light circular motions, working from the outside edge toward the center as Exo Terra instructs. For a thick softened crust on actual glass, a compatible plastic scraper may help at a shallow angle. Avoid metal razor blades on acrylic or coated panels and stop if the surface begins to scratch or haze.
Step 8: Rinse with clean water
Remove the gel with clean damp cloths, rinsing or changing them repeatedly so residue is not merely spread. Exo Terra specifically calls for a water rinse. Wipe silicone edges and door tracks with water only, controlling runoff. Continue until the surface has no slippery feel, visible film or cleaner odor.
Step 9: Dry and repeat only where necessary
Dry the panel with a clean lint-free cloth and inspect from several angles. Exo Terra says the process can be repeated if a stain persists. Repeat a small area rather than applying more pressure. A permanent scratch, etched surface or damaged coating will not disappear through additional chemical cleaning.
Step 10: Restore the habitat after complete airing
Clean door tracks of remaining debris, reinstall dry decor and refill water with the appropriate conditioned source. Confirm all cleaner, rinse water and disposable covers are gone. Reconnect equipment, restore the correct temperature and humidity and verify doors and locks. Return the animal only after surfaces are dry, the enclosure is aired and normal environmental readings are stable.
