Step 1: Cool the kettle and separate the base

Turn the kettle off, unplug the base and let the vessel cool completely. Empty leftover water before cleaning. Place the electrical base away from the sink, and keep the connector underneath the kettle dry. This separation matters because lifting an electric kettle off its stand does not turn it into a plain washable saucepan. Check the finish, handle and underside for damage before proceeding; a cracked housing, loose electrical fitting or evidence of liquid entry needs assessment rather than a descaling cycle.

Step 2: Decide whether you are washing or descaling

Look at the interior in good light. Loose residue and soap-removable film call for ordinary cleaning; pale mineral deposits call for descaling. Fellow's maintenance guidance explains that scale can resemble water spots or rust. That does not mean every orange mark is conclusively harmless. Note what changes after an approved descale. Persistent pitting, flaking or a stain that does not respond should not trigger escalating abrasive treatment.

Step 3: Hand-wash the inside without immersing the vessel

Use mild soapy water and a soft sponge inside the cooled kettle, then rinse thoroughly. Keep the outside connector and base out of the wash water. Neither the kettle nor its base belongs in a dishwasher. Avoid steel wool, scouring pads and abrasive cleaners, which can damage the finish or interior. Pay attention to the pouring lip and accessible lid surfaces, but do not force a rigid brush through the narrow gooseneck. Gentle accessible cleaning is different from dismantling the spout or temperature-sensing parts.

Step 4: Use the manufacturer's measured vinegar method

For mineral buildup, Fellow specifies equal parts vinegar and water, heated to a boil and left for at least thirty minutes before disposal and thorough rinsing. Stay within the kettle's marked fill limits and keep the lid fitted as instructed for heating. Reconnect only when the exterior and connector are dry; this powered step is an intentional descaling cycle, not permission to clean a live base. Let the solution cool to a safe handling temperature before emptying. Do not combine vinegar with another cleaner.

Step 5: Rinse until the descaler is gone

Unplug again before handling wet exterior surfaces. Rinse the vessel thoroughly, emptying through the normal pouring route while protecting the electrical underside. If vinegar odor remains, continue with clean-water rinsing rather than covering it with tea or flavoring. A commercial descaler is an alternative only when suitable for this kettle and used according to its own dose and rinsing instructions. Do not translate a vague spoon measure for another acid into an invented concentration or increase strength to compensate for impatience.

Step 6: Wipe the finish and keep special handles separate

Use a damp cloth on the exterior and base, followed by drying. Work around controls without pressing a wet cloth into their seams. Wooden accents require the separate care guidance linked from Fellow's maintenance page; soaking a wood handle while cleaning the steel is not appropriate. Check that the cord and plug are dry and undamaged. Treat a cosmetic mark differently from a spill into the base: wiping the surface does not establish that liquid inside electrical equipment has been made safe.

Step 7: Return to water-only use and set a cleaning interval

Fellow recommends cleaning at least monthly; adjust inspection frequency to your water's mineral content. Use the model safety and troubleshooting resource if heating remains abnormal after cleaning. Keep normal use to water, consistent with Fellow's water-only guidance. Approved descaling is a maintenance exception, not permission to heat milk, soup or sugary drinks.
