How to Clean a Fi Dog Collar and Tracker
A Fi collar combines a washable textile band with an electronic GPS tracker, metal endlinks, charging contacts and a base. Fi's official care guidance separates the tracker from the collar band before washing. The band can be hand-washed in warm water with detergent or, when appropriate, placed in a mesh bag for a warm gentle machine cycle, then air-dried. The tracker needs controlled wiping rather than a trip through the washer. Waterproofing is useful during normal swimming, but it does not make detergent, washer agitation or wet charging harmless. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Power down and inspect the collar
Remove the collar from the dog and check the band, buckle, endlinks and tracker for cuts, corrosion, cracks or deformation. Note the installed orientation or take photos. If an endlink is loose or the band is frayed near a load point, cleaning is not enough; use an approved replacement before relying on the collar for restraint.
Step 2: Remove the Fi tracker from the band
Use the series-specific Fi method and tool to detach the tracker without twisting the contacts or prying against its case. Keep small hardware together and away from the sink. Never put the tracker, charging base or adapter in a washer. If the unit has just been in water, rinse external salt or chlorine as Fi advises and dry it before further handling.
Step 3: Brush mud and hair from the dry band
Let heavy mud dry, then brush it from the weave, buckle and endlink areas. Pick out burrs without dragging them through fibers. This reduces the amount of soil entering wash water and exposes wear that dirt concealed. Brush charging-contact recesses with a dry soft tool only; do not scrape them with metal or an abrasive pad.
Step 4: Hand-wash the collar band
Fi allows hand-washing the band in warm water with detergent. Work a small amount of mild detergent through the textile, flexing it gently around the buckle and endlink loops. Use a soft toothbrush on localized grime. Avoid bleach, fabric softener and stain solvent, which can leave residue, alter color or affect coatings and stitching.
Step 5: Use a machine only for an approved band
Fi also permits the band in a mesh laundry bag on a warm gentle cycle. This permission applies to the band after the tracker is removed, not to electronics. Secure the buckle so it does not strike the drum. When a third-party band or its hardware has a different care label, follow that maker's instruction instead of assuming Fi's textile method transfers.
Step 6: Wipe the tracker and contacts carefully
Use a soft water-dampened cloth on the tracker exterior and immediately dry it. A lightly damp cotton swab can lift accessible grime around the endlink interface, followed by a dry swab. Do not soak the detached module in detergent, spray cleaner into a seam or use compressed air. Visible case damage or moisture inside the display area warrants Fi support.
Step 7: Air-dry every component before assembly
Rinse the band until no detergent remains, blot it and hang or lay it open to air-dry. Fi directs air drying rather than tumble heat. Let folds beneath hardware dry fully. Keep the tracker and charger separate until their surfaces and contacts are dry. Charging with moisture or cleaner on contacts can cause unreliable connection or corrosion.
Step 8: Reconnect, charge and verify security
Install the tracker in the photographed orientation using Fi's exact endlink method. Pull firmly by hand on both sides to confirm it is locked, then place the dry unit on its charger and check normal charging status. Refit the collar with safe clearance and verify location reporting in the app. Do not use the electronic collar as the sole restraint if its band or hardware is compromised.
