How to Clean a FoodSaver VS2100 Vacuum Sealer
A FoodSaver that struggles to vacuum may have crumbs around its gaskets or liquid in its drip tray, but cleaning must keep moisture out of the powered body. This guide follows the VS2100 series, where the tray and upper and lower gaskets are removable for cleaning. Other FoodSaver models may not share that arrangement. Identify the series first, then separate the wet-cleanable parts from the seal bar, controls, and appliance housing before doing any washing.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Unplug the sealer and let the sealing area cool
Finish or cancel the current operation, unplug the machine, and wait until its sealing area is cool to touch safely. Remove bags, food, and the roll if they obstruct access. Check that your unit is in the VS2100 series before pulling out a gasket. FoodSaver's VS2100 cleaning guide allows component removal for this series; another model may have fixed seals. Keep raw food and used cleaning cloths away from the bag roll and freshly cleaned parts.
Step 2: Remove crumbs and empty the drip tray
Open the lid and inspect the vacuum channel, gasket tracks, and tray. Lift loose food away with a soft cloth rather than using a pointed tool in the channel. Remove the drip tray and empty its collected liquid after each use. Do not tip the entire appliance to drain it, since liquid may move into areas that should remain dry. If a spill has entered the housing instead of staying in the tray, stop using the sealer and obtain the appropriate support advice.
Step 3: Wash the removable tray separately
Wash the detached drip tray in warm soapy water with a nonabrasive sponge, then rinse. The VS2100 instructions also permit the tray on the dishwasher's top rack. That permission is for the tray, not the whole machine or every gasket. Check corners and the rim for remaining food residue before drying. A tray can look clean from above while its edge still carries a sticky deposit, so inspect both sides. Put it on a clean towel away from the unwashed channel while finishing the appliance.
Step 4: Clean and inspect the upper and lower gaskets
First wipe the gaskets gently with a warm soapy cloth if needed. On this series they can be removed for washing, but note their original placement before lifting them out. Clean with warm soapy water, rinse as appropriate, and allow complete drying before refitting. Do not stretch, trim, oil, or aggressively squeeze the material. FoodSaver's gasket support guidance treats seal condition as important to vacuum performance. Cracks, permanent distortion, or a damaged track are separate from ordinary food residue.
Step 5: Wipe the tray slot and housing without flooding
Use a controlled damp-cloth method to remove accessible residue around the tray slot and vacuum channel. Keep liquid away from openings, controls, and the powered sealing assembly. Do not immerse the appliance, pour rinse water into the channel, or scrape the sealing strip with metal. Use a separate clean cloth for the exterior handles and lid. If a stain does not affect cleanliness or operation, do not escalate to solvents just to remove its color. The aim is a residue-free food-handling surface without damaged seals.
Step 6: Dry fully and refit parts without twisting
Wait until the tray, gaskets, and cleaned recesses are dry, then return each part to its original position. Seat gaskets evenly in their tracks and look for folds or stretched areas before closing the lid. The VS2100 owner's manual, reproduced by ManualsLib provides the arrangement and care sequence. If you want a function check, use a new empty compatible bag after reassembly rather than risking food while diagnosing a leak or incomplete seal.
Step 7: Use the storage latch position and check persistent faults
After cleaning and any test, unplug the dry machine and put the latch in the middle Store position. The VS2100 manual warns against leaving it in Operate during storage because prolonged gasket compression can affect vacuuming. A unit that still fails should be checked for correct bag placement, compatible bags, gasket condition, and the model's troubleshooting steps. Do not repeatedly hold the lid down by force or add oil to create a temporary seal. Cleaning the machine also does not make perishable vacuum-packed food safe at room temperature.
