How to Clean a GE Dishwasher Filter
GE dishwashers do not all have the same filter system. Many newer models use a removable cylindrical Ultra Fine Filter above a flat Fine Filter, while some older and current designs use a self-cleaning filtration system with no user-removable filter. GE's official guidance says to identify the model before removal and suggests inspecting a removable filter about every other month, or sooner when dishes feel gritty or cleaning performance falls. On the documented removable design, the Ultra Fine Filter twists counterclockwise and the Fine Filter is retained by two rear posts. Forcing a twist on a self-cleaning model can damage the sump, so model identification is the first cleaning step rather than a formality.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Find the model and filter type
Read the model number from the tub frame and open its GE manual. Confirm whether it names an Ultra Fine Filter and Fine Filter or a self-cleaning system. Do not twist the round sump area merely because an online photo looks similar. A fixed self-cleaning assembly is not a neglected removable filter.
Step 2: Make the dishwasher safe to reach into
Cancel the cycle, let hot parts cool and switch off power at the breaker when the manual or work area requires it. Remove the lower rack. Check for broken glass before using bare fingers, and never reach beneath cloudy standing water without seeing the sump.
Step 3: Inspect before removal
Look for labels, arrows, a handle and the two rear Fine Filter retaining posts shown in GE's instructions. Photograph their positions. Scoop out only loose surface debris that is safely reachable; do not push food or glass into the drain opening.
Step 4: Remove the Ultra Fine Filter
On the matching GE design, turn the cylindrical Ultra Fine Filter counterclockwise and lift it out. Hold it upright so captured debris does not fall into the sump. If it will not turn with normal hand pressure, stop and recheck the model rather than using pliers.
Step 5: Wash the Ultra Fine Filter gently
Rinse it under warm water and use mild dish soap with a soft sponge. GE advises against scouring pads or brushes on this filter because its mesh can be damaged. Clear every section without crushing pleats, then rinse until no suds or visible food remains.
Step 6: Remove the Fine Filter when required
After the Ultra Fine Filter is out, turn the two retaining posts at the rear counterclockwise on the documented system and lift the flat Fine Filter. Keep the posts with the filter. Do not pry the spray arm, heating element or sump cover.
Step 7: Clean the Fine Filter
Wash the mesh plate in warm mild soapy water with a soft sponge. GE allows a soft brush or sponge for stubborn soil or calcium on this Fine Filter; use light pressure and support the panel so it does not bend. Do not enlarge mesh openings or scrape with metal.
Step 8: Wipe the accessible sump edge
Use a damp cloth to lift loose residue around the filter seat. Keep fingers and tools out of the pump opening, and do not pour drain cleaner, bleach mixture or descaler into the exposed sump. A persistent hard-water deposit should be addressed with a GE-approved dishwasher treatment after reassembly.
Step 9: Reinstall in the correct order
Set the Fine Filter flat, align it and turn both rear retaining posts clockwise to secure. Insert the Ultra Fine Filter, align its arrow as shown by GE and twist clockwise until locked. It should sit flush without wobbling; an unlocked filter can allow debris to recirculate.
Step 10: Restore power and verify
Spin the lower spray arm by hand to confirm it clears the filter, reinstall the rack and restore power. Run a short rinse with the machine empty and watch for normal drainage. If the filter repeatedly fills, the sump holds water or dishes remain gritty, use GE troubleshooting or service rather than forcing deeper pump access.
