Step 1: Relieve pressure before taking anything apart

Turn the switch OFF, engage the gun trigger lock, and set the pressure control to its lowest position. Put the drain tube in the waste pail and move the valve to PRIME. Hold the gun firmly against a pail, point it into the pail, release the trigger lock, and trigger the gun to discharge remaining pressure. Lock the trigger again. Leave the valve in PRIME. If pressure may remain because of a blockage, stop and follow the manual's blockage instructions; do not loosen fittings to find out.

Step 2: Remove the tip assembly and arrange the flushing pails

With pressure relieved, remove the spray-tip guard assembly as directed and put it aside for cleaning. Lift the suction and drain tubes from the paint, allowing excess material to drain, then separate the smaller drain tube from the larger suction tube. Put the suction tube into fresh water and the drain tube into the waste pail. Water is the flushing fluid for this page's water-based-paint scope. Collect contaminated rinse water for disposal according to the coating label and local requirements rather than sending it into a storm drain.

Step 3: Flush the pump through the drain tube

Set the pressure knob to START, confirm the valve is in PRIME, and turn the sprayer ON. Let it circulate flushing water through the pump into the waste pail. The manual's pail sequence uses roughly one-third of the starting flushing fluid for this stage, then switches the sprayer OFF. Watch the fluid supply throughout; do not walk away and let the suction tube draw from an empty pail. Maintain the safe operating setup required by the manual, including the correct electrical supply and stable pails.

Step 4: Flush the hose and gun into the waste pail

The manual offers recovery of the hose's remaining paint into the paint pail; you may instead direct that material into the waste pail. Hold the gun firmly to the pail, unlock and hold the trigger, move the valve to SPRAY, then turn the sprayer ON. Continue the controlled flush until the discharged fluid is relatively clear, maintaining a water supply. Never aim at a hand or try to stop the stream with a finger. High-pressure fluid injection is a medical emergency, even when the surface wound looks small.

Step 5: End flushing and repeat pressure relief

Turn the pressure knob down to its lowest setting, stop triggering, and engage the trigger lock. Move the valve to PRIME and switch OFF. Before opening the gun for its filter, repeat the full pressure-relief procedure rather than assuming the flushing stop sequence made every passage pressure-free. Disconnect power for the hands-on cleaning work. A tip clog, leaking connection, or unresponsive control calls for the manual's troubleshooting path; cleaning should not continue by opening an uncertain pressurized connection.

Step 6: Clean the gun filter, tip, and guard separately

After pressure relief, unscrew the gun handle from the gun head as shown in the manual and remove the filter for cleaning with water and a soft brush. Replace a damaged filter. Wash the removed tip and guard assembly, then reinstall the components in the order shown in the spray-tip installation diagram, including the correct gasket and seal placement. Wipe the outside of the gun with a soft water-moistened cloth. Do not immerse the electrical sprayer body or use a wire to enlarge a spray-tip opening.

Step 7: Finish with the correct storage procedure

A clean water flush is not the final preparation for extended storage. Graco specifies Pump Armor for storage longer than two days and warns against leaving the sprayer full of water, frozen, or pressurized. Follow the illustrated Pump Armor loading procedure on pages 27–28 of the manual, including its final valve position; do not substitute a generic leave-in-PRIME rule for those storage steps. Leave the system off, unplugged, and protected indoors. Keep the gun attached to its hose as directed and store all fluids safely.
