How to Clean a HAKKO Soldering Iron Tip and Restore Solder Wetting

A clean soldering tip is not a bare, polished piece of metal. Its working surface should accept a protective coating of solder, rather than repel it into little balls. This guide follows HAKKO's care instructions for plated electronics-soldering tips. It separates quick cleaning during work from recovery of an oxidized tip and from cleaning the cooled station. These operations require different power states. Do not immerse the iron or sand its plated surface, and do not treat a worn hole in the tip as dirt that can be polished away.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Identify the working surface and inspect for damage

With the equipment cool, check the tip for a changed shape, holes or damaged plating. The working end is the area intended to accept solder; the rest of the tip is not necessarily supposed to become solder-coated. HAKKO USA's tip-life guidance explains that the copper core is protected by plating, so filing or sanding can destroy the structure you need to preserve. Replace a physically worn tip rather than trying to grind it back into shape.

Step 2: Prepare the cleaner before heating the iron

Secure the holder and cleaner where the hot tip can reach them without crossing the power cord. A purpose-made brass-wire cleaner is not the same as a steel kitchen scourer. If using a soldering sponge, dampen it with distilled or deionized water and remove excess water; do not use a dripping household sponge. Keep fingers clear of the hot end and remove flammable clutter. Follow the iron's own setup and temperature instructions. Tip maintenance is performed deliberately at the hot working end, while station cleaning waits until power is disconnected and everything has cooled.

Step 3: Clean just before making a solder joint

Heat the iron in its holder. Immediately before soldering, wipe the working surface in the compatible cleaner to remove old solder and surface residue. Use controlled contact rather than striking the tip against the holder or scraping it on the workbench. Feed fresh electronics solder and check that it spreads over the working area. If it does, continue with the job; no chemical treatment is needed. Repeatedly polishing a healthy tip for its appearance adds wear without improving the connection you are about to make.

Step 4: Keep the tip coated during pauses

When returning the iron to its holder, leave the working surface covered with solder. If you have just cleaned it and little solder remains, apply more before resting it. That reconciles the two useful rules: clean before the joint, and do not leave a freshly cleaned hot tip bare afterward. Use the lowest temperature that reliably suits the solder and work. HAKKO advises switching off when not soldering for more than five minutes; do not leave an idle iron hot throughout a long interruption.

Step 5: Try the controlled oxidation-recovery method

If solder still beads on a darkened working surface, follow HAKKO's oxidation troubleshooting. Its wire-and-solder method uses a 250°C tip setting, repeatedly feeding flux-cored solder and wiping with the cleaning wire. Work only with an iron whose temperature can be controlled appropriately. Watch for solder beginning to wet the surface, then coat the recovered area. This is a recovery setting, not a universal soldering temperature, and it is not a reason to alter a fixed-temperature tool.

Step 6: Use chemical tip care only as the specified supplement

If the gentle method is insufficient, HAKKO describes FS-100 at approximately 350°C: dip the tip, remove the paste with the proper sponge or wire cleaner, and apply solder to check wetting. Follow the product's handling instructions and use only compatible equipment. Do not substitute plumbing flux, household acids or an unidentified aggressive tip tinner. HAKKO USA treats chemical tip care as supplemental, not the routine before every joint. If cleaning still cannot restore wetting, or you discover a physical defect, replace the tip.

Step 7: Finish with solder protection and cool safely

Before shutdown, leave a protective solder coating on the working area and put the iron in its holder. Switch off, disconnect power as the station instructions require, and let it cool before changing tips or cleaning the stand. Collect cooled solder debris rather than brushing it onto the floor or food surfaces, and wash your hands after handling soldering materials. Inspect the cleaner for accumulated debris and replace worn cleaning media. Store the iron only when cool, with the cable and tip protected from impacts.

Why does solder roll into balls on the tip?
Oxidation can prevent solder from wetting the working surface. Try the appropriate cleaning and re-tinning method. Damage, unsuitable solder or other equipment problems may also need attention.
Should I leave the tip shiny and bare after use?
No. Leave its working surface coated with solder before resting or shutting down. A clean but bare hot surface is exposed to oxidation, which makes the next soldering session harder.
Can I use sandpaper or a file?
Not on the plated HAKKO tips covered here. Abrasion can expose the copper core. A tip with holes or a changed working shape needs replacement rather than reshaping.
Is a damp sponge or brass cleaner better?
Both compatible methods appear in HAKKO's guidance. A proper brass-wire cleaner leaves some protective solder and reduces thermal shock. Use distilled or deionized water when preparing a soldering sponge.
What temperature removes oxidation?
HAKKO's wire-and-flux-cored-solder recovery method specifies 250°C. Its FS-100 method uses about 350°C. These are method-specific settings, not a blanket instruction to solder every component at either temperature.
Can I use FS-100 every time?
Chemical tip treatment is supplemental. Routine cleaning and solder coating are the normal starting point. Follow the FS-100 instructions when recovery is needed and avoid substituting aggressive unknown cleaners.
When should I replace the tip?
Replace it if the shape has deteriorated, holes or plating defects appear, or the specified cleaning methods no longer restore solder wetting. Cleaning cannot rebuild the protective metal layers.
Can I wash the whole soldering iron?
No. Hot tip wiping is separate from cleaning the cooled, unplugged equipment. Do not immerse the iron, connector or station, and follow the exact station manual for exterior care.
