How to Clean Invisalign Aligners
Invisalign aligners are thin thermoplastic trays whose fit can be changed by hot water and whose clarity can be reduced by abrasive scrubbing or colored cleaner. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Remove and rinse promptly
Wash and dry your hands, remove the aligners using even pressure and rinse them in cool or lukewarm water. Immediate rinsing prevents saliva and loosened film from drying. Never start with hot or boiling water, which can distort the thermoplastic and alter the fit.
Step 2: Brush both tray surfaces gently
Use a soft-bristle brush reserved for the trays. Support one aligner in your palm and brush the outside, inside and attachment recesses with light pressure. Invisalign guidance may permit a small amount of toothpaste and water, but avoid abrasive whitening paste; a mild clear cleaner reduces the chance of scratches or colored residue.
Step 3: Rinse away all cleaner
Hold each tray under lukewarm running water until no foam, crystals or slick feeling remains. Inspect the edges and deep tooth pockets. Do not scrape mineral film with a pin and do not flex the tray inside-out to reach a corner.
Step 4: Prepare official Cleaning Crystals
For a deeper clean, rinse the aligners and place them in a clean container. Add enough warm water to immerse them, about the official tub's 100-milliliter line when applicable, then add one packet of Invisalign Cleaning Crystals. Do not add soap, mouthwash or another cleaning tablet to the same bath.
Step 5: Agitate, soak and agitate again
Agitate the solution for about 20 seconds so the powder dissolves around the trays. Let the aligners soak for the product-directed interval, commonly 15 minutes, then agitate again for about 20 seconds. Follow the packet if its current directions differ.
Step 6: Rinse after the soak
Remove the trays and rinse them thoroughly with clean water. Discard the used solution; it is not a storage liquid and should not be saved for another cycle. Examine the trays in good light for cracks, sharp edges or deposits that did not release.
Step 7: Wash and dry the case
Empty the case, wash it with mild soap and lukewarm water, rinse and wipe it. Leave it open until dry. Putting clean aligners into a damp case containing old residue immediately recontaminates their exterior.
Step 8: Store or reinstall correctly
Return rinsed aligners to clean teeth or place them in the dry ventilated case. Do not wrap them in tissue, where they can be discarded or pick up fibers. If a tray no longer seats, has warped, cracked or developed a sharp edge, preserve it and use the treatment provider's replacement instructions rather than reshaping it with heat.
