How to Clean an Iwata Eclipse HP-CS Airbrush: Cup, Needle, and Nozzle

The Iwata Eclipse HP-CS is a gravity-feed airbrush with a delicate needle and a compression-fit nozzle. A color change usually needs a cup rinse and a controlled flush; a persistent clog may need needle or nozzle cleaning. This guide focuses on water-based airbrush paints and compatible cleaner. Solvent-based coatings require their own chemical, ventilation, and fire-safety precautions, not an automatic substitution of household thinner.

What you will need

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Empty the color cup before paint dries

Pour excess paint into an appropriate waste container rather than spraying the entire leftover amount into the room. Add compatible cleaner to the cup and wipe accessible residue from its sides. Keep paint and cleaner away from the air-hose connection and trigger recess. Work in a ventilated area with a suitable cleaning pot for the discharge. A pot helps contain spray but does not replace ventilation or the precautions on the paint and cleaner labels.

Step 2: Flush for a color change

With the airbrush connected and pointed safely into the cleaning pot, spray cleaner until the discharge is clear. Repeat with a small fresh amount if color remains, then add the next paint. The HP-CS has a fixed gravity cup: instructions about removing a siphon bottle or a Takumi cup do not apply. Between-color rinsing is useful for wet paint; it should not be mistaken for removal of a dried deposit that continues to disrupt the spray pattern.

Step 3: Disconnect the air supply and clean the needle

For hands-on work, disconnect the airbrush from its air source. Remove the rear handle, loosen the needle chucking nut by hand, and withdraw the needle straight back. Support it over a clean work surface so the tip cannot fall onto the bench. Wipe with cleaner on a soft cloth, moving toward the sharp point rather than into it. A bent needle or split tip is a replacement problem. Do not attempt to straighten it against the nozzle or force it back through the body.

Step 4: Inspect the front end only as deeply as needed

Remove the needle and nozzle caps for access when a normal flush has not cleared buildup. If nozzle removal is necessary, keep the needle safely withdrawn and remove the head cap using the Eclipse instructions and supplied tool only as needed. The HP-CS nozzle seats by compression; it is not the tiny screw-in nozzle used on other Iwata families. Catch it in a parts tray, including if it remains inside the head cap. Do not apply a threaded-nozzle wrench to the nozzle itself.

Step 5: Soften and remove the isolated deposit

Clean the removed nozzle and caps with compatible cleaner and a suitably small soft cleaning tool. Iwata's cleaning guidance distinguishes soaking these removed front-end pieces from immersing the entire airbrush. Never soak or wet-store the assembled body. Avoid forcing a metal probe through the nozzle opening; enlarging or scoring it changes the spray. Keep cleaner out of the air-valve mechanism, and retain the parts in order so a missing cap is noticed before reassembly.

Step 6: Reseat parts gently and use lubricant sparingly

Refit the compression nozzle and head cap without overtightening. Guide the clean needle forward gently until it seats; if it stops abruptly before the normal position, retract it and inspect alignment rather than pushing harder. Tighten the chucking nut finger-tight and replace the handle. When lubrication is needed, use the small amount of proper airbrush lubricant specified by Iwata and wipe away excess. The manual excludes light machine oil and WD-40 because they can interfere with the packing and airflow.

Step 7: Test before returning to the artwork

Reconnect air and test with water when compatible with the paint system. On this dual-action brush, depressing the trigger should supply air; pulling back admits fluid. Unexpected fluid with the trigger only depressed suggests checking needle seating. An uneven pattern, bubbling cup, or persistent sputter may also involve nozzle damage, a loose cap, paint thickness, or pressure. Use the manual's symptom table instead of escalating to stronger solvent. Finish with an empty cup and dry exterior; do not store cleaning liquid in the airbrush.

Does the HP-CS nozzle unscrew?
The nozzle itself is compression-fit. The head cap is removed to access it. Do not confuse this arrangement with the small threaded nozzles on other Iwata models.
Can I soak the complete airbrush overnight?
No. Iwata prohibits whole-airbrush soaking and storage with paint or cleaner in the cup. Clean designated removable parts separately and keep liquid out of the air system.
Must I remove the nozzle for every color change?
No. Emptying, wiping, and flushing the cup normally handles wet paint between colors. Deeper disassembly is for deposits or symptoms that remain, not an automatic requirement every few minutes.
Which direction should I wipe the needle?
Move toward the pointed end with a cleaner-dampened soft cloth. Support the needle and avoid pushing your hand into the point or bending it against a hard surface.
Can I use WD-40 as airbrush lubricant?
No. The Eclipse manual excludes WD-40 and light machine oil. Use an appropriate airbrush lubricant sparingly when required, and remove excess that could reach the paint path.
Why does water spray before I pull the trigger back?
Check that the needle is fully and correctly seated. Disconnect air before adjustment. If gentle reseating does not solve the issue, inspect the needle and nozzle rather than forcing the needle forward.
Is every airbrush cleaner suitable for every paint?
No. Match the cleaner to both the coating and airbrush instructions. This water-based cleanup does not authorize flammable-solvent spraying without the required ventilation and other safeguards.
What if cleaning does not fix the spray pattern?
Check pressure, paint preparation, cap seating, and needle or nozzle damage using the troubleshooting table. Dirt is only one possible cause; more soaking will not repair a cracked nozzle.
