How to Clean Karndean Flooring Without Damaging It
Karndean luxury vinyl flooring is water resistant, but it is not improved by steam, flooding or a harsh all-purpose cleaner. Karndean's official care guidance recommends removing dust with a soft broom, then damp mopping with diluted Karndean Clean or another pH-neutral cleaner approved for vinyl. Karndean also says not to use a steam mop or steam cleaner, and advises checking that a vacuum is suitable for hard flooring. The method below covers gluedown, loose-lay and rigid-core Karndean surfaces at a routine-care level; installation joints, commercial maintenance and region-specific Remove and Refresh products still require the care guide for the exact floor. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Confirm the flooring and finish
Use installation records or a spare plank to identify the Karndean range, construction and finish. Review its regional care guide before using a restoration product. Do not assume care for ceramic tile, laminate or sheet vinyl applies to luxury vinyl planks.
Step 2: Remove grit before damp cleaning
Sweep with a soft broom or dust mop. If vacuuming, use a machine the manufacturer considers suitable for hard flooring, disable an aggressive rotating brush and keep hard wheels clean. Grit dragged under a mop can create fine scratches.
Step 3: Blot spills promptly
Karndean advises cleaning spills quickly. Blot liquid with a white absorbent cloth and lift solids with a plastic-edged tool held nearly flat. Avoid spreading grease across plank joints. A wet floor can be slippery, so keep people away until it is clean and dry.
Step 4: Dilute the correct cleaner
Mix Karndean Clean according to its current label or choose a pH-neutral product expressly approved for vinyl. More concentrate can leave a dull, sticky film. Do not combine cleaners or use bleach, ammonia, abrasive powder, solvent or oil soap without written approval.
Step 5: Damp-mop a manageable section
Wring the microfiber mop until damp rather than dripping and move with the plank direction in overlapping passes. Keep solution from pooling at walls, thresholds and joints. Change visibly dirty water instead of redistributing grit.
Step 6: Treat a localized mark gently
Put diluted cleaner on a white cloth or soft nonabrasive pad and work a small area with light pressure. Test in an inconspicuous place. Do not use steel wool, a melamine pad without approval or a razor, all of which can alter the wear layer.
Step 7: Remove cleaner residue
Follow the product label for whether a clean-water pass is needed. If residue or streaking remains, use a fresh well-wrung mop with clean water rather than adding more chemical. Dry the area with airflow and avoid walking on it while slippery.
Step 8: Never use steam
Karndean explicitly says not to use a steam mop or steam cleaner. Heat and concentrated moisture can affect joints, adhesive and finish. A device advertised as safe for generic vinyl does not override Karndean's flooring guidance.
Step 9: Prevent scratches and staining
Fit clean furniture pads, lift rather than drag heavy pieces and place suitable entrance mats to capture grit. Karndean warns that some rubber-backed items can affect flooring, so use non-rubber mats and casters confirmed compatible with vinyl.
Step 10: Use Remove and Refresh only as a system
For accumulated film or finish restoration, follow the current regional Karndean Remove and Refresh sequence for the exact floor. Do not spot-apply concentrated stripper or polish as ordinary cleaner. Deep scratches, lifted joints or moisture beneath planks need an installer or Karndean support.
