How to Clean a Kenmore Intuition BU4022
The Kenmore Intuition BU4022 is a bagged upright, but its sealed dirt path still depends on a correctly locked disposable bag, a washable foam filter, a washable HEPA media exhaust filter and a brushroll free of hair. Kenmore's operator manual gives different wash chemistry for the two filters: the foam filter receives warm soapy water, while the HEPA exhaust filter receives cold water only with no soap or detergent. Both must air-dry for 24 hours. The manual also says attachments may be washed in warm soapy water but not in a dishwasher. This guide follows those BU4022-specific procedures and keeps all washed parts away from the powered vacuum until fully dry.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Unplug before service
Switch the vacuum off and unplug the cord from the wall. Lock the handle upright and work on a dry floor. Kenmore warns that the cleaner can start suddenly if left connected. Do not drip water onto the vacuum or service a powered brushroll.
Step 2: Replace the dust bag
Pull the bag-chamber cover release out and up, then tilt the chamber as the manual shows. Press the dust-bag release so the full bag drops without squeezing it. Insert a new compatible bag collar into the bracket until it clicks, rotate the bracket down until the second click and tuck the bag flat inside the chamber.
Step 3: Close the bag chamber correctly
Place the cover tab in its slot and press the cover until it clicks. The cover will not assemble correctly if the bag is missing or unlocked. Never reuse, empty or wash a disposable bag; fine dust can escape through damaged media and load the filters.
Step 4: Remove the foam filter
With the bag removed as described in the manual, take out the foam-filter cover and foam filter. Inspect for tears, crumbling or permanent deformation. Kenmore says the vacuum must not operate without this filter, so do not bypass it while a washed filter dries.
Step 5: Wash and dry the foam filter
Wash the foam filter in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly and squeeze out excess water without tearing it. Air-dry for 24 hours. Do not use a dishwasher and never install it damp. Fit the dry foam into its cover, slide the assembly into its slots and press until it clicks.
Step 6: Wash the HEPA exhaust filter
Pull the bottom tab of the exhaust-filter cover outward, remove the HEPA media filter and wash it with cold water only. Kenmore specifies no detergent or soap. Air-dry it for 24 hours, then reinstall it and seat the cover's upper tabs before pressing the lower release until it clicks. Kenmore recommends this cleaning about yearly.
Step 7: Clear the brushroll
Keep the vacuum unplugged, turn it over on a protected surface and inspect the brushroll. Use small scissors to cut carpet fiber, string and hair lengthwise, keeping the blades away from bristles, belt area and housing. Pull debris free rather than rotating the brushroll against a jam.
Step 8: Wash attachments separately
Detach nonpowered tools from the hose or wand. Kenmore allows attachments to be washed in warm soapy water, rinsed and air-dried, but says not to use a dishwasher. Do not use an attachment while wet. Keep powered parts, hose connections and the Pet HandiMate motor area dry.
Step 9: Wipe the exterior and store
Wring out a soft cloth dipped in mild detergent and water, wipe the exterior and wipe dry. Do not drip water onto the unit. Reassemble only dry parts, loosely wrap the cord around its hooks and store the vacuum upright on a dry indoor floor. A damaged cord, worn filter or brushroll that will not turn requires replacement or service.
