How to Clean and Re-Oil a K&N Air Filter
K&N makes multiple filter types, so the first step is confirming an oiled cotton-gauze filter rather than assuming every reusable filter needs oil. K&N's cotton-filter procedure uses its cleaner, a ten-minute soak that must not dry, a cool low-pressure rinse from the clean side outward, natural air drying and an even application of K&N filter oil. Compressed air, heat, harsh detergent and high-pressure water can damage the media. Over-oiling can also create runoff or contaminate nearby sensing components. This guide covers removable K&N oiled cotton automotive air filters; cabin, dry synthetic and specialty filters need their own instructions.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Confirm the filter media
Look up the K&N part number. The clean-and-re-oil process is for the brand's oiled cotton-gauze filter, not automatically for a cabin filter, Dryflow-style synthetic filter or another manufacturer. Record filter orientation and inspect for torn pleats, separated seals or damaged wire mesh before investing in cleaning.
Step 2: Remove the filter without dropping dirt inward
Switch the engine off and let hot components cool. Follow the vehicle manual to open the air box. Photograph orientation, then lift the filter so dirt on its incoming side does not fall into the clean intake tract. Cover the open clean tract with a clean lint-free barrier while you work.
Step 3: Apply K&N cleaner
Gently tap off only loose surface debris; do not beat, brush or blow through the pleats. Liberally apply K&N cleaner to both sides as its directions state. Let it soak for ten minutes to dissolve grime, but do not allow the cleaner to dry on the filter. Repeat the cleaning application if contamination is unusually heavy.
Step 4: Rinse from the clean side outward
Use cool low-pressure water on the clean side so dirt is flushed back out through the side where it entered. Move across the pleats until all cleaner and dirty runoff are gone. Do not reverse the flush, use a pressure washer or stretch a nozzle against the media.
Step 5: Remove excess water gently
Shake the filter gently and set it where water can drain. Do not twist, wring, brush or push towels into the pleats. Inspect in good light. If a section is still visibly loaded, repeat cleaner and low-pressure rinse rather than increasing mechanical force.
Step 6: Air-dry completely
Let the filter dry naturally in a shaded dust-free area. Do not use compressed air, a hair dryer, heat gun, oven, radiator or direct high heat. Oil and trapped water do not distribute predictably, so the entire pleated media and seams must be dry before the oiling stage.
Step 7: Apply the correct K&N oil
Apply K&N filter oil evenly along the crown of each pleat with the product held at its labeled distance, or use the squeeze bottle method specified for the kit. Allow approximately twenty minutes for oil to wick through the cotton, then inspect from both sides for lighter areas.
Step 8: Touch up—do not saturate
Apply a small amount only to light spots. The goal is uniform coloration, not dripping media. Blot oil from the rubber seal, frame or wire where the instructions call for it; do not rub the cotton. If oil is pooling, allow excess to drain and consult K&N before installation.
Step 9: Reinstall and seal the air box
Remove the protective intake cover, wipe the air-box sealing surface without pushing dirt downstream and return the filter in its original orientation. Seat the gasket evenly, close every clip or fastener and reconnect anything removed. A pinched seal bypasses filtration no matter how clean the media looks.
