How to Clean a KONG Rubber Dog Toy
A classic KONG rubber toy has a narrow opening, an internal cavity and a small vent hole where food can dry out of sight. KONG recommends warm water and dish soap for routine cleaning, soaking for stubborn residue, brushing the interior and, when preferred, using the dishwasher's top rack without the heated drying cycle. Cleaning also creates the best opportunity to inspect the rubber: a split, missing piece or enlarged opening is not made safe by sanitizing. This guide applies to genuine KONG natural-rubber toys whose care instructions allow these methods. Treat plush, rope, dental and electronic toys according to their own labels rather than assuming every KONG-branded item belongs in the dishwasher.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Remove filling and inspect the rubber
Take the toy away after the dog finishes and remove loose food with a spoon or blunt approved tool. Flex it gently under good light and inspect the large opening, small vent, ridges and thinnest sections. Discard a toy that is cracked, sticky, heavily gouged or missing rubber. Choose the correct KONG size and supervise use; cleaning does not reverse chewing damage.
Step 2: Rinse through both openings
Run warm water into the large cavity and through the small vent hole to loosen fresh residue. Squeeze and release the flexible toy several times while it is filled so water moves around the interior. Keep the small hole open; a blocked vent can trap water and food. Do not use a sharp skewer or knife that could puncture rubber or leave a fragment.
Step 3: Soak stubborn dried food
KONG recommends soaking when residue is difficult. Submerge the rubber toy in warm water with a small amount of dish soap and allow dried food to soften. The soak should be long enough to loosen the material, not an indefinite chemical bath. Weighted debris may settle inside, so refill and squeeze the toy after soaking rather than assuming the cavity is clean.
Step 4: Brush the internal cavity
Insert a narrow bottle brush or purpose-made KONG brush through the large opening and scrub the internal walls, bottom and neck. Use a smaller soft brush around outer grooves. Inspect what rinses out and repeat until no food pieces remain. Do not substitute a wire brush, abrasive powder or solvent, all of which can damage the rubber surface or leave unsafe residue.
Step 5: Rinse away every trace of soap
Flush clean water through both openings, repeatedly fill and squeeze the toy, and continue until the water runs clear without foam or food odor. Hold it up to light where possible to check the vent path. Soap inside a cavity is easy to miss and can transfer to the next filling, so use several complete exchanges of water rather than one exterior rinse.
Step 6: Use the dishwasher only as KONG directs
For a dishwasher-approved natural-rubber KONG, place it securely on the top rack so water reaches the cavity. KONG says to skip the heated drying cycle. Do not mix the toy with dishes coated in harsh cleaner residue, and never use this permission for a plush, rope, squeaker or electronic KONG item. A hand scrub is still useful before the dishwasher when thick food is lodged inside.
Step 7: Drain and air-dry the cavity fully
Shake out water, stand the toy so air can enter the large opening and ensure the small vent is not pressed against a solid surface. Rotate it during drying. Do not add a fresh filling or freeze the toy while rinse water remains inside, because retained moisture can dilute food, carry residue and create odor in a cavity that is difficult to inspect.
Step 8: Inspect again before refilling
When the toy is dry, flex it once more and confirm that both openings are clear and no rubber fragment is loosening. Refill with an appropriate amount and texture of food, accounting for the dog's diet. Wash after messy fillings rather than repeatedly topping up old residue. Replace the toy whenever its condition no longer supports safe supervised use.
