How to Clean a Litter-Robot 4 and Its Sensors

A Litter-Robot 4 has two very different cleaning zones. The removable globe and waste drawer can be washed with mild soap and water, while the base, control panel, and OmniSense components contain electronics and must never be submerged, sprayed, or soaked. Dust, cat fur, litter film, a raised seal strip, or a stretched drawer liner can also block the bezel sensors and cause a flashing blue light or an inaccurate waste reading. Whisker recommends basic globe cleaning every one to three months and a deeper cleaning at least every three months, adjusted for the number of cats and actual buildup.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Empty the globe from the control panel

With the unit in its normal Home position, press Empty so the globe rotates clockwise and litter falls through the waste port. Sweep remaining dry litter toward the opening. Press Cycle or Reset to return the globe Home and confirm it has finished moving. Do not add water while litter remains; wet litter can become a clay-like paste in screens, seams, and the waste opening.

Step 2: Power off, unplug, and remove accessories

Turn the unit off and unplug it. Remove the fence, shield, LitterHopper, or other installed accessory according to its instructions. Open the bonnet by holding the side buttons and rotating it upward, then lift the globe from the base by its handle. Remove the carbon filter beneath the globe and set electronics and dry-only components away from the wash area.

Step 3: Wash the removable globe

The globe does not contain the base electronics, so Whisker permits cleaning it with water and mild soap; an extremely dirty globe may be soaked or hosed after removal. Wash the liner, screen, waste port, rim, and exterior without puncturing the flexible liner or pulling at seals. Do not use bleach or a bleach-containing product inside the globe because Whisker warns it may cause irritating fumes.

Step 4: Clean the waste drawer and fit a new liner flat

Pull out the drawer, discard waste, and wash the removable drawer with mild soap and water or an approved Litter-Robot cleaning product. Rinse and dry it. Install a clean liner with its edges around the drawer flange and press the bag flat against the walls and bottom. Whisker notes that a stretched, billowing, or dark bag can cause inaccurate drawer-full readings; light or white liners work best.

Step 5: Keep the base and control panel dry

Never submerge, spray, hose, or soak the base. Apply any suitable disinfectant to a cloth away from the machine, then wipe accessible base surfaces with the cloth only. Prevent liquid from running into the control panel, motor, connectors, sensor openings, or weight-scale components. Do not set a wet globe back onto the base.

Step 6: Dry-clean the bezel and visible debris

Hair and dust on the top bezel can interfere with the curtain or drawer-full sensing path. Wipe the bezel with a clean dry cloth, then use a vacuum's soft brush attachment to lift debris from the area without striking the sensor openings. Inspect the waste opening and the front seal strips for stuck fur, litter, or an edge peeling upward into the sensing field.

Step 7: Clean the OmniSense laser surfaces

If readings or light-bar warnings persist, remove the bonnet, globe, and drawer and lean the unplugged base back as Whisker's sensor guide shows. Look into the bezel openings. Lightly wipe each sensor surface with a clean dry cotton swab. Gentle compressed air may clear loose fur, but use it without touching, chilling, or blasting the sensors. Do not add cleaner, water, or a wet swab.

Step 8: Let washed components dry completely

Drain the globe from more than one angle so water does not remain in a recess. Air-dry the globe, liner edges, gear track, drawer, and accessories until no droplets or damp seams remain. Trapped water can carry litter into a paste, add unwanted weight, affect odor, or reach the electronic base during reassembly.

Step 9: Reinstall the globe and bonnet correctly

Set the dry globe on the base near its Home orientation, with the handle and waste port toward the top. Confirm the rear gear track engages the motor pinion and the globe sits flush in the rear bearing pocket. Rotate the bonnet down with light inward pressure at the sides, latch both sides, and make sure the top center tab is secured. The unit will not run correctly with the bonnet unlatched.

Step 10: Power on, reset, and test a cycle

Reinstall the dry drawer and accessories, plug in, and power on. A ready unit shows a solid blue bar. Short-press Reset and then Cycle to run a clean cycle. Watch that the globe returns Home and the bar becomes solid blue. If a flashing blue light remains, verify that the liner is flat, firmware is current, the sensing field is clear, and the unit sits on a firm level surface before moving to Whisker's calibration or parts troubleshooting.

Can I hose down a Litter-Robot 4?
Only the globe after it has been completely removed from the base may be washed or, when extremely dirty, hosed according to Whisker. Never hose, spray, soak, or submerge the base or control panel because they contain sensors and electronics.
Can I use bleach inside the Litter-Robot 4 globe?
No. Whisker says not to use bleach or products containing bleach inside the globe because they may create irritating fumes. Use water with mild soap or a product Whisker lists for the globe.

Can I spray disinfectant directly onto the base?
No. Spray the product onto a cloth away from the machine, then wipe the base without letting moisture enter openings, controls, connectors, or sensor areas.
Why will the unit not cycle after reassembly?
