How to Clean a Microsoft Surface Pro and Keyboard

A Microsoft Surface Pro combines a coated touchscreen, metal enclosure, narrow vents and ports, a kickstand and—on many setups—a detachable Signature Keyboard with Alcantara-covered palm rests. Microsoft allows a soft lint-free cloth, water when needed and an isopropyl-alcohol solution of 70 percent or less for the screen, while warning against glass cleaner, other chemical cleaner and direct spraying. The Signature Keyboard uses a different mild-soap method and its connector must remain dry. This guide covers modern Surface Pro tablets and the removable Surface Pro Signature Keyboard; always check Microsoft's care page for model-specific materials and remove accessories before cleaning.

Avoid
Direct spray, glass cleaner, strong chemicals, abrasives, compressed air and heat drying.

What you will need

  • Microsoft's Surface cleaning and care instructions
  • Two or more soft lint-free microfiber cloths
  • Clean water
  • Optional screen-cleaning wipe or isopropyl alcohol solution no stronger than 70 percent
  • Warm water and a small amount of mild hand soap for compatible keyboard material
  • A dry soft brush for loose port and vent dust
  • White lint-free cloths for the Signature Keyboard and Alcantara
  • A clean dry work surface

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Shut down and disconnect everything

Save work, shut the Surface Pro down and unplug the power supply. Remove USB devices, Surface Connect accessories, headphones and the detachable keyboard. Take off a case or sleeve if it traps moisture. Let a recently used device cool. Never clean the tablet while charging, and do not insert cloth, liquid or metal tools into a port.

Step 2: Remove dry particles before wiping

Use a clean dry microfiber cloth to lift dust from the display and enclosure. Hold the tablet so loose debris falls away from openings, then use a dry soft brush across vent slots, speaker openings and port edges. Do not use compressed air, a vacuum nozzle against the screen or a brush that sheds fibers into connectors.

Step 3: Clean the touchscreen with Microsoft's approved limits

Microsoft recommends a screen-cleaning wipe or a soft dry lint-free cloth. If more cleaning is needed, lightly dampen the cloth with water or an isopropyl-alcohol solution at 70 percent or less. Wipe in gentle broad passes without pressing at the edges. Never spray or pour liquid onto the screen, and do not use glass cleaner, household chemical cleaner or abrasive pad.

Step 4: Wipe the enclosure and kickstand

Use a soft cloth lightly dampened with water on the back, sides and kickstand. Open the kickstand to remove dust at the hinge with a dry cloth; do not push liquid into the pivot or pry the hinge. Keep moisture away from cameras, microphones, vents and seams. Follow immediately with a dry cloth so liquid cannot collect along an edge.

Step 5: Clean ports and connectors dry

Inspect USB, Surface Connect and audio openings under good light. Brush only loose surface dust with a clean dry soft tool, moving outward. Wipe accessible metal contacts with a dry lint-free cloth. Do not use liquid, a cotton swab that can snag, a pin or canned air inside a connector. If compacted debris prevents a plug from seating, seek service rather than digging.

Step 6: Mix the Signature Keyboard cleaning solution

For the Signature Keyboard and its Alcantara-covered surfaces, Microsoft recommends warm water with mild soap such as hand soap. Make a weak solution, dampen a white lint-free cloth and wring it thoroughly. White cloth shows whether color or soil is transferring. Keep the keyboard detached and its connector edge away from the bowl.

Step 7: Clean the keyboard and Alcantara evenly

Wipe keys individually without pressing liquid between them. On Alcantara, use gentle swirling motions and clean the surrounding panel evenly so a water ring does not form. Microsoft advises addressing spills within 30 minutes when practical. Do not apply solution directly, scrub with a stiff brush or use bleach, solvent, fabric protector or a soaking-wet cloth.

Step 8: Dry the keyboard and connector

Wipe the keyboard with a second dry white lint-free cloth, then leave it detached and open on a flat ventilated surface. Confirm that key gaps, fold lines, the connector strip and Alcantara are dry. Do not accelerate drying with a hair dryer, radiator or direct sun. A spill that entered the keys or connector requires more drying and possibly Microsoft support.

Step 9: Reassemble and test

When all surfaces and connector points are dry, attach the keyboard, reconnect power and start the tablet. Test touch, keyboard, trackpad and charging. Stop using it if the screen shows liquid beneath the glass, keys behave unpredictably, a port becomes hot or a battery area swells. Cleaning cannot repair liquid intrusion or physical damage.

Specific cleaning questions

Open a question for a concise answer about stains, odors, safety, frequency, and troubleshooting.

Can I use alcohol on a Surface Pro screen?
Microsoft allows a cloth lightly dampened with an isopropyl-alcohol solution of 70 percent or less. Never spray it directly or let liquid reach screen edges and openings.
Can I use glass cleaner on a Surface Pro?
No. Microsoft says not to use glass cleaner or other chemical cleaners on the touchscreen. Use a screen wipe, dry lint-free cloth, water or approved-strength isopropyl alcohol.
How do I clean a Surface Pro Signature Keyboard?
Detach it and wipe with a well-wrung white lint-free cloth dampened in warm water and mild hand soap. Use gentle motions, then dry and air it fully.
How do I clean Alcantara on a Surface keyboard?
Use the mild-soap solution sparingly on a white cloth and make gentle swirling motions over an even area. Do not soak, aggressively scrub or apply fabric protector.
Can I use compressed air in Surface Pro ports?
Avoid it. Use a dry soft brush only at the opening, and seek service if compacted debris blocks a connector rather than forcing tools or air inside.
What should I do after spilling liquid on the keyboard?
Disconnect it promptly, blot without pushing liquid deeper, clean compatible surfaces within about 30 minutes when safe and leave it detached until completely dry. Seek support for malfunction or major ingress.
Can I clean the Surface while it is charging?
No. Shut it down, unplug power and disconnect accessories first. Reconnect only after all surfaces, ports and keyboard contacts are dry.
Why is the screen still streaky?
Use a fresh dry microfiber cloth and light overlapping passes. Excess solution, a dirty cloth or pressure near the edge commonly causes streaks; do not add stronger cleaner.
