How to Clean and Descale a Nespresso Vertuo Next
The Vertuo Next spins barcode-read capsules inside a locking brewing head, so coffee residue around the capsule seat, outlet, and head can matter just as much as mineral scale inside the water circuit. Routine cleaning and the machine's cleaning cycle remove residue; descaling is a separate guided program that treats limescale. Vertuo Next controls are not interchangeable with VertuoPlus's motorized head or with Original-line machines. Use the assistance page for the exact Vertuo Next revision and finish every stage before returning to coffee.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Eject the capsule and cool the machine
Open the head, allow the used capsule to drop into the container, and make sure no capsule remains in the seat. Close and lock the head only when the selected procedure asks for it. Switch off and unplug the machine for hand-cleaning, then let hot surfaces cool. Never put a hand into the capsule chamber while the machine is powered.
Step 2: Wash the removable collection parts
Remove the capsule container, cup support, and drip tray. Empty liquid and capsules promptly because wet coffee residue encourages odor. Wash the pieces with warm water, mild odorless dish soap, and a soft cloth unless the manual gives different dishwasher guidance. Rinse and air-dry completely before reassembly.
Step 3: Clean the reservoir without contaminating it
Remove the water tank and lid, empty stale water, and wash them gently by hand. Rinse until no soap remains and refill with fresh drinking water for a cleaning cycle. Do not pour dish soap through the machine, scrub the reservoir with abrasives, or let a cloth leave fibers inside the tank or inlet.
Step 4: Wipe the accessible brewing head
With the unit unplugged, open the head and wipe only the accessible surfaces around the capsule seat and outlet with a clean damp cloth. Remove loose coffee residue without pressing on the barcode-reading area, puncture components, or spinner. Do not use a sharp tool, flood the head, dismantle the rotating assembly, or spray cleaner into it.
Step 5: Run the regular cleaning cycle
Fill the clean reservoir, place a sufficiently large container beneath the outlet, close and lock the empty head, and start the cleaning program using the current Vertuo Next instructions. This water-only cycle flushes coffee residue but does not replace descaling. Let the automatic sequence finish, then discard the hot water and wipe any splashes.
Step 6: Prepare for descaling
When the machine indicates descaling or the official interval is reached, eject the capsule and empty the drip tray and capsule bin. Add one Nespresso descaling-solution unit and the specified amount of water to the tank. Do not use vinegar: Nespresso warns that it may damage the machine. Put the required large container under the coffee outlet.
Step 7: Enter and complete Vertuo Next descale mode
Follow the Vertuo Next assistance page's current lock-lever and button sequence; do not use the VertuoPlus lever procedure. On applicable Vertuo Next versions, holding the button for at least seven seconds is part of entering the special-functions process. Follow the light prompts and keep the container in place. Do not add a capsule or stop the cycle during its descale stage.
Step 8: Rinse and exit the program
Rinse the reservoir thoroughly, fill it with fresh water, and run the prompted rinse. Empty the collection container as needed without letting it overflow. Complete the exact exit sequence so the machine returns to ready mode. If the warning remains, compare the light pattern with Nespresso's assistance page rather than repeating button combinations at random.
