How to Clean a Nugget Play Couch
A Nugget play couch has three separate care layers: removable upholstery covers, optional protective liners and open-cell polyurethane foam. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Identify whether soil is on cover, liner or foam
Separate the affected piece from the play setup and remove loose hair with a vacuum tool or lint roller. Unzip the upholstery cover carefully and inspect any liner and foam. Knowing how deeply a spill traveled prevents unnecessary foam wetting. Note the fabric name and sewn care label before choosing machine settings for a special textile.
Step 2: Spot-clean a cover only after removing it
Nugget says to take the cover off the foam before applying a moist cloth or upholstery solution, keeping cleaner out of the cushion. Blot from the edge of a mark inward with a clean white cloth and avoid saturating the backing. Test any compatible upholstery product in a hidden area and rinse or blot it as its directions require.
Step 3: Prepare covers for machine washing
Remove all foam and liners, then close each cover's zipper so teeth and fabric edges are protected. Wash with same-color Nugget pieces to limit dye transfer and abrasion. Nugget recommends a clear-color detergent. Do not add bleach, fabric softener or an unapproved stain product, and do not overload the washer with heavy household laundry.
Step 4: Wash cold and hang-dry
Select the coldest appropriate machine setting. Hot water can affect color and fit. When the cycle ends, remove covers promptly, smooth seams and hang them with good airflow. Nugget says hang-drying helps prevent shrinkage; do not tumble-dry simply to speed the process. Wait until zipper tapes, corners and layered seams are dry before refitting.
Step 5: Clean a protective liner separately
If the couch has Nugget liners, remove them from the foam, close their zippers and wash them cold alone, then hang-dry. Nugget identifies diluted Dawn as an option for direct liner stains. Do not treat a liner's water resistance as permission to wash it hot or cover damp foam. Inspect the barrier for punctures and seam damage.
Step 6: Blot spills from exposed foam
Press a clean dry cloth firmly into wet foam to draw liquid out; do not rub, which can push contamination wider. Repeat with dry sections of cloth. If residue remains, Nugget permits warm water with a small amount of Dawn on a damp cloth. Use the least moisture needed, blot again and never put the foam in a washing machine.
Step 7: Dry foam completely with moving air
Stand the foam so air reaches several faces and use a fan or open window. Nugget warns against direct sunlight, which can damage or discolor foam. Rotate the piece and continue pressing a dry towel into the deepest area to check for moisture. Depending on spill depth, full drying can take much longer than surface fabric.
Step 8: Reassemble and protect the cleaned couch
Return only completely dry liners and covers to dry foam, easing corners into place without forcing zippers. Check that no cleaner odor or damp cool spot remains. Rebuild the couch on a clean indoor floor; Nugget is intended for indoor use and rain or ultraviolet exposure can cause damage. Vacuum or lint-roll regularly so full laundering is needed less often.
