How to Clean a NutriMill Classic Grain Mill Without Wetting the Mill

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Clear the normal milling run before unplugging
When the grain has finished passing through normally, allow about five additional seconds of running to clear residual flour, as NutriMill directs. Gently tap the lid to settle loose flour, switch off, and unplug before opening or handling removable parts. This short clearing run is not advice to keep powering a jammed or stalled mill. If the sound changes sharply, an obstruction is suspected, or the motor stops unexpectedly, shut down and investigate before attempting any cleaning run.
Step 2: Empty both collection areas
Remove the flour bowl and transfer its contents to a suitable container. Empty the separator cup as well; overlooking that smaller collection point can leave old flour in the machine even after the main bowl is washed. Work over a tray or counter that can be wiped afterward, and avoid shaking dust toward vents. Note how the cup and bowl fit before separating them. Keep a small dry brush for loose flour around their seating surfaces so these areas do not need a wet wipe inside the mill.
Step 3: Wash only the detached parts approved for water
NutriMill's cleaning guidance permits warm soapy water for the flour bowl and separator cup. Wash those removed pieces, rinse off soap, and leave them to air-dry completely. Do not extend that permission to the motor housing, milling chamber, foam filter, or every piece attached to a lid. Water mixed with flour makes a paste that is harder to clear from confined passages. If a component is not specifically identified as washable in your version's instructions, keep it dry until its care method is confirmed.
Step 4: Clean the filter and milling area dry
Tap flour from the filter rather than washing it. Inspect it for damage or persistent blockage and replace a deteriorated filter instead of saturating it. Use a dry cloth or soft brush on accessible flour deposits around the milling area; do not pour water into the hopper or spray cleaner into the housing. Keep tools away from powered mechanisms. Step 5: Use the specified rice treatment only when appropriate
For an occasional deeper clean, NutriMill recommends milling three cups of dry white rice at the coarse setting, approximately every six months or as needed. First make sure the mill is dry, unobstructed, correctly assembled, and suitable to operate; then run the rice as a normal milling batch with the collection bowl installed. Unplug afterward and empty the collected material. This is a model-specific grain-mill procedure, not a general rule for coffee grinders. Do not substitute wet rice, oily seeds, nuts, or already-ground flour.
Step 6: Check seals, airflow, and symptoms before blaming dirt
A poorly seated bowl or worn inlet grommet can let flour escape even when the components are clean. Inspect the fit without forcing the bowl into place. NutriMill's Classic troubleshooting guidance separates collection and airflow problems from motor faults. A tight bowl gasket may be lightly dusted with flour using the manufacturer's setup advice; do not oil the grinding mechanism. NutriMill suggests replacing the filter and inlet grommet around two years, or sooner if their condition requires it.
Step 7: Reassemble only after complete drying
Check the washed bowl and separator cup inside and out, including rims and recesses, before returning them to the dry mill. Refit the filter and collection parts correctly, remove the cleaning brush, and keep the hopper free of foreign objects. Store the mill where moisture cannot condense into flour residue. At the next use, watch for escaping flour, reduced flow, or an unusual sound rather than assuming a rice treatment repaired the machine. Stop if the problem continues; repeated powered attempts can conceal a mechanical issue.
