How to Clean an OASE BioSmart 5000 or 10000 Pond Filter
An OASE BioSmart pond filter should not be scrubbed sterile every weekend. Its foams provide biological as well as mechanical filtration, so cleaning removes accumulated waste while preserving useful bacteria. This guide follows the US BioSmart 5000/10000 operating instructions for the flow-through filter with cleaning handles, slide valve, sludge drain, and water-level indicator. It does not cover a pressurized FiltoClear, an indoor BioMaster, or the different integrated-UVC models sold under related names elsewhere. Identify the unit first, arrange a safe brief shutdown, and keep dirty discharge out of the pond while checking that the normal return remains unobstructed.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Use the indicator and flow to decide when to clean
Check the water-level indicator and the filter's normal return flow. OASE calls for cleaning when the indicator float becomes visible from outside, and otherwise recommends cleaning only as required so the filter biology can develop. A newly installed biological filter may take weeks to become established; cloudy water during startup is not automatically proof that the foams need aggressive washing. Also check for leaves or a restricted outlet. An overflowing flow-through filter can drain the pond, so visible backup needs prompt attention rather than a later cosmetic cleanup.
Step 2: Shut down safely and prepare the drain route
Switch off and disconnect the pump and any connected UVC equipment according to their instructions before opening or servicing the system. OASE also requires disconnecting all units used in the water before reaching into the water. Plan a short maintenance interval appropriate to your pond's needs, and keep plugs and connections dry. Direct sludge to a suitable disposal route that will not return it to the pond or create runoff into a waterway. Confirm the normal pond-return pipe and separate sludge drain are correctly identified before operating a valve.
Step 3: Use the cleaning handles gently
Open the filter's outer cover. Pull and pump the foam-cleaning handles several times, using moderate, controlled movement rather than fast, forceful strokes. The handles mechanically squeeze accumulated dirt from the foams while the media remain in their holders. Do not add soap, bleach, or a household disinfectant to make the water look cleaner; OASE warns that chemical cleaning agents kill bacteria in the filter foams. Start with this built-in method rather than removing every foam block whenever the indicator rises.
Step 4: Drain the released sludge and close the valve
When drainage is needed, remove the sludge-drain cap if fitted, open the slide valve, and let the filter's dirty water drain through the prepared route. Close the valve again afterward and restore the cap or correctly installed permanent drain connection for normal use. Keep the pump off while your hands are working around the filter. Do not leave the valve open when restarting: the same drain that conveniently removes waste can also send pond water out of the system. If more cleaning is necessary, follow the manual's repeat sequence deliberately.
Step 5: Remove foams only for the deeper cleaning they need
If the handle method is insufficient, release the handle engagements and inner-cover clamps as shown in the manual, then remove the media holders. Note the positions before separating the foams. OASE specifies a bucket of pond water for more thorough foam cleaning; use that gentle method to remove trapped waste without attempting sterilization. Clean accumulated dirt from the emptied container and covers with clean water. Inspect torn or persistently blocked media. The green foam goes in the black holder on this arrangement; do not shuffle colors or replace every foam solely because it is stained.
Step 6: Free the water-level indicator if it sticks
A dirty indicator can mislead you after the foams have been cleaned. With the system off, turn the indicator approximately 30 degrees counterclockwise and lift it from the inner cover as the manual shows. Remove the plug and float, rinse them with clean water, and reassemble so the float moves freely. Do not glue or immobilize it to make a high reading disappear. If the indicator still shows substantial soiling after correct cleaning and normal flow checks, OASE directs inspecting the foams for replacement rather than ignoring the warning.
Step 7: Reassemble, restart, and watch the return
Engage the foam-holder handles through the inner-cover slots, secure all its clamps, and refit the outer cover. Verify that the sludge valve is closed, the discharge arrangement is secure, and the pond return is clear before restarting the pump. Observe the filter as it fills and check for leaks, overflow, and steady return flow. Restore associated equipment only according to its operating sequence, including water-flow requirements for UVC. Seasonal shutdown is a separate task: follow the manual's cold-weather draining, cleaning, frost-free media storage, and hose-draining instructions rather than leaving a water-filled filter to freeze.
