How to Wash an Orvis Dog Bed Correctly
Orvis sells platform, bolster, ToughChew, ComfortFill-Eco and memory-foam beds, so the product name alone does not tell you which components can enter a washing machine. Orvis's demonstrated bolster-bed method removes the bolster and base insert, turns and closes the empty cover, washes it cold and dries it on low. RecoveryZone and other current models may add foam layers, liners or model-specific care labels. The safest procedure therefore begins with the exact bed label and treats the cover, fill, foam and protector as separate materials rather than forcing the assembled bed into a washer.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Identify the Orvis construction and read every label
Find the product name, size and fill type. Distinguish the outer cover from a bolster, base insert, memory-foam slab, ComfortFill chamber, waterproof liner or ToughChew panel. A RecoveryZone bed may not disassemble exactly like the classic bolster bed shown in Orvis's general washing guide. Follow the most specific sewn label whenever it differs from general advice.
Step 2: Vacuum hair, grit and dried mud
Vacuum both faces, piping, corners and the lower edge before opening any zipper. Use a pet-hair brush to lift strands woven into the nap. Let ordinary mud dry and brush it away instead of smearing it with water. Dry removal protects the washing machine, exposes stains and keeps grit from grinding against the fabric during laundering.
Step 3: Remove the bolster and base insert
Open the access zipper with the bed flat and the side adjustments relaxed. Orvis's bolster-bed process begins by removing the bolster, followed by the base insert. Work slowly around corners and support memory foam with both hands. Do not pull a large insert by one edge, fold rigid foam sharply or assume loose fill can be removed without an inner containment liner.
Step 4: Secure the empty cover for washing
Check zipper tracks for hair, sand and trapped fabric. Turn the cover inside out if the model instructions direct, then close its zippers so teeth and sliders cannot snag other fabric. Fasten hook-and-loop pieces and remove any accessory the label treats separately. Inspect seams before washing; laundering a split seam can release backing or enlarge the opening.
Step 5: Blot and pretreat compatible stains
Blot liquid with clean white towels. Test a small amount of mild detergent solution on a concealed section, then work from a stain's outside edge toward its center. Avoid bleach, solvent, fabric softener and concentrated fragrance unless the exact Orvis label allows them. Do not saturate a laminated, coated or ToughChew layer in an attempt to erase a permanent discoloration.
Step 6: Wash the empty cover cold
Orvis instructs owners to wash the removable cover in cold water. Use a gentle cycle, mild detergent and a machine large enough for the cover to move without being tightly packed. Wash it separately from rough hardware and lint-shedding items. If the cover is oversized for the drum, use a suitable large-capacity machine rather than forcing it around the agitator.
Step 7: Dry according to the specific model
Orvis's general bolster-bed method uses low dryer heat. Confirm that direction on the sewn label, because specialized fabrics or liners may require air drying. Open and shake the cover before drying, use only low heat when permitted and remove it promptly. Check piping, zipper flaps and interior corners for cool damp spots before reassembly.
Step 8: Clean inserts only by their own instructions
Vacuum foam and contained fill gently. Spot-clean only if the label permits, using minimal moisture and thorough air movement. Do not machine-wash a memory-foam slab or soak dense fill unless Orvis specifically marks it washable. A waterproof liner can trap water at a seam, so wipe and dry both sides. Replace an insert that is crumbling, deeply contaminated or permanently misshapen.
Step 9: Reassemble the base and bolster evenly
Orient the base insert correctly and slide it into place without curling its edges. Feed the bolster around the perimeter a section at a time, smoothing fill into corners. Keep zipper teeth aligned and stop if the slider meets resistance. A twisted bolster or folded foam edge creates uneven support and places extra strain on the cover when the dog lies down.
Step 10: Shape, inspect and return the bed to service
Close all zippers, turn the bed over and press across its surface. Confirm that no liner bunches, hardware protrudes or damp odor rises from an insert. Let compressed fill regain its form. Place the bed in a dry location and monitor the first use; a damaged zipper, torn protective layer or exposed foam should be repaired or replaced before the dog can chew it.
