How to Clean an Osprey Hydraulics Reservoir

Step-by-step instructions

Before you begin: Inspect and prepare

Note what the reservoir held and how long it sat before choosing between a routine rinse and full disassembly. Cloudiness, colored residue or odor inside a hose is not fixed by cleaning only the visible bladder. Work over a clean sink so small seals cannot disappear, and lay parts in removal order. Replace a split bite valve, leaking weld, deformed closure or connector that will not lock; potable-water equipment should not depend on improvised glue or sealant.

Step 1: Empty and rinse after every use

Pour out remaining liquid promptly. Add clean water, close the reservoir, shake gently and drain through both the main opening and hose. Rinse especially well after sports drink, electrolyte mix or juice because sugar left in the system supports odor and biofilm.

Step 2: Disassemble the drinking path

Follow the exact Hydraulics connector design to remove the hose from the reservoir and the bite valve from the hose. Remove the silicone bite-valve cover as Osprey directs. Keep seals and small parts together; do not use pliers or a sharp pick on soft components.

Step 3: Prepare warm mild-soap solution

Fill the bladder with warm water and a small amount of mild washing-up liquid. Osprey says not to use bleach or boiling water. Boiling water can damage the reservoir and void the guarantee, while excess soap makes the long hose difficult to rinse.

Step 4: Brush the inside of the reservoir

Use the large Hydraulics cleaning brush to contact the inner walls, corners and area near the outlet. Support the bladder on a clean surface and avoid forcing the brush into seams. Work until slippery film is gone, then send some soapy water through the outlet.

Step 5: Brush the detached hose

Feed the small brush through the hose in the direction and distance designed by the kit. Withdraw it without scraping connectors. Repeat until no colored or slippery residue appears. A rinse that clears only the bladder leaves the longest, narrowest part of the system untreated.

Step 6: Wash bite valve and cover separately

Clean the removed silicone cover and bite valve in warm soapy water, flexing only as their design allows. Pay attention to grooves where the cover sits. Do not cut the drinking slit wider, invert a part that is not designed to invert or boil silicone components.

Step 7: Rinse every component with cool water

Rinse the bladder inside and out, hose, bite valve and cover with cool clean water. Continue until there are no bubbles, scent or slippery spots. Flush rinse water through the hose rather than rinsing only its ends. Inspect seals before reassembly.

Step 8: Open the system for complete drying

Let the hose and bite-valve parts dry separately in a ventilated area. Insert Osprey's drying rack into the bladder and hang it open so inner walls cannot seal together. Shake out low points in the hose and position both ends for airflow. Do not close damp parts in a pack.

Step 9: Reassemble dry and store clean

When all components are fully dry, reconnect the cover, valve and hose according to the model. Store in a clean dry place. Osprey notes that freezing does not harm an empty reservoir, but water expands when frozen and can damage an overfilled system; never freeze a full sealed bladder.
