How to Clean a Petzl GRIGRI and Inspect Its Rope Path
A Petzl GRIGRI needs a clean rope path and freely moving components, but washing does not certify a belay device as safe. Remove ordinary dirt gently, dry the device, and complete the manufacturer's inspection and function checks before use. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Identify the device and review its history first
Read the product marking and serial number, distinguishing GRIGRI, GRIGRI 2, GRIGRI+, and NEOX. Check the older GRIGRI 2 recall above when applicable. Remove the device from service if its history is unknown, it has suffered a significant event, or damage is suspected. Do not clean a questionable secondhand device and assume appearance establishes reliability. Work on the ground with no load and no person relying on the equipment. Keep this maintenance task separate from an active climbing or lowering system.
Step 2: Expose accessible surfaces without dismantling the device
Open the moving side plate in its normal user-operated way and remove the rope. Brush loose chalk and ordinary dirt from accessible areas with a small soft brush. Keep the brush away from contaminated chemicals or metalworking residue. Do not remove rivets, force axles out, or open the handle mechanism. The neighboring NEOX model has a different internal arrangement; a video showing its wheel is not a GRIGRI disassembly guide. If dirt cannot be removed without unauthorized dismantling, contact Petzl.
Step 3: Wash with mild soap and lukewarm fresh water
Petzl's metal-equipment care guidance permits mild face or body soap and water up to 30°C/86°F, followed by thorough rinsing. Use gentle brushing to lift mud rather than scraping the rope-contact surfaces. Fresh-water rinsing is particularly important after a salty environment. Do not use acids, solvent baths, harsh degreasers, or a pressure washer. Ordinary cleaning is not a method for clearing a device contaminated by an unknown chemical; segregate it and seek Petzl's assessment before further use.
Step 4: Keep the rope path free of residue and lubricant
Rinse accessible surfaces until soap and loosened dirt are gone. Pay attention to the rope path and friction areas, which must not contain foreign material or lubricant. Do not add oil as a routine finishing step, spray the whole device, or coat the cam to make it feel smoother. Any lubrication question needs instructions specific to the mechanism from Petzl. Its general metal-care advice is not permission to leave a slippery film where the rope passes through a belay device.
Step 5: Dry completely and inspect under good light
Remove surface water with a clean cloth and allow thorough drying in a ventilated place away from strong heat and direct sunlight. Examine the moving plate, attachment hole, frame, cam, axle area, and friction surfaces for abnormal wear, corrosion, cracks, deformation, or missing parts. Use Petzl's assisted-blocking belay-device inspection procedure. A polished rope path is not automatically defective, but a hole, crack, or uncertain wear is not something to file smooth or dismiss without competent evaluation.
Step 6: Check movement and arrange competent inspection when needed
Follow the device-specific inspection instructions for cam movement, its spring, and handle return. Stop if a part binds or fails to return as expected. Petzl recommends detailed inspection by a competent person every twelve months and after exceptional events, in addition to routine checks. A home wash cannot replace that review. Have a trained user perform the exact technical notice's function checks with compatible equipment in a controlled safe setting; do not improvise a loaded test from a short cleaning article.
Step 7: Store dry and keep questionable gear out of circulation
Return only equipment that passes the required checks to its clean, dry storage space. Keep it away from chemicals and conditions that could hide corrosion or damage. Record unusual contamination or an incident for the next competent inspection. Label and segregate doubtful or retired equipment so another climber cannot mistake it for ready-to-use gear. Before the next session, inspect again and follow the full operating instructions. Cleanliness does not remove the need for correct rope compatibility, technique, and continuous braking control.
