How to Clean a Plunge Cold-Plunge Tub and Chiller

Step 1: Identify the tub, chiller, filter, and service schedule

Write down the names on both the tub and chiller before starting. An Evolve Tub with Pro Chiller, Evolve with Standard Chiller, Gen 1 Residential Plunge, All-In, Air, and tub-only setup do not share every valve, filter, hair-catch, cleaner, or interval. Use the matching Plunge care page. The Evolve Pro residential schedule calls for debris, drain-screen, waterline, and chemistry care at least every two days, a new filter monthly, water replacement at least every three months, and a yearly deep clean.

Step 2: Remove surface debris and clear drain screens

Use a skimmer net to lift hair, leaves, insects, and floating debris from the water. Clear visible material from the drain screens without pushing it deeper into the plumbing. Outdoor installations may need this more often than the minimum schedule. A blocked screen or neglected filter can reduce flow, and Plunge warns that reduced flow can damage the system.

Step 3: Wipe the waterline and maintain the water

Use a clean, soft cloth to wipe the film at the waterline. Test and maintain water chemistry using the manual and supplies approved for that residential setup; do not guess at a universal sanitizer dose. Showering before use and keeping the cover and surrounding area clean can reduce the oils and organic material entering the tub, but it does not replace the required water-care schedule.

Step 4: Pause circulation before opening anything

Before draining, removing a filter, opening a hair catch, or changing valve positions, pause or turn off the system and wait for the jets and water flow to stop. Follow the exact chiller's electrical instructions; Plunge's deep-clean reminders also direct owners to unplug the chiller before draining or removing a filter. Close only the valves named in the matching procedure and never run the pump against closed valves.

Step 5: Service the filter and hair catch for the exact chiller

Replace the water filter at the stated interval using the specified cartridge and housing sequence. Evolve Standard systems also have a hair catch that Plunge schedules for weekly cleaning: once the unit is off and the correct valves are closed, the metal strainer can be removed and rinsed, then replaced without cross-threading the housing. Reopen every required valve before restarting. Do not treat a quick filter rinse as a permanent substitute for a scheduled replacement.

Step 6: Drain and refill using the model procedure

For an Evolve series tub, Plunge instructs owners to remove the drain-spigot cap, attach a garden hose, and turn the white ball valve parallel to the tub to drain. After draining, close the valve by turning it perpendicular and replace the cap before refilling according to initial setup. Route water to an allowed drain location. Other tubs have different drain points and water-change intervals, so do not force this Evolve sequence onto another model.

Step 7: Clean accessible tub and chiller surfaces

Use only the cleaner approved for the tub material and rinse it away completely. The rigid Evolve tub and vinyl Plunge Air have different official product guidance, so a cleaner safe on one surface should not be assumed safe on the other. For Gen 1 chillers, Plunge provides a separate monthly or as-needed routine for removing and cleaning the two side screens and the lower front screen. Keep ventilation openings free of dust and debris without spraying the electrical chiller body.

Step 8: Use the official deep-clean sequence, not a shortcut

When the model's schedule calls for an internal deep clean, read the current Plunge procedure from beginning to end before adding a product or heat. Plunge warns never to run a system without its filter during normal use or troubleshooting. Its universal deep-clean procedure contains one tightly limited filterless rinse only after the approved hot cleaning cycle has circulated, the system has been drained, and loosened buildup has been rinsed away. Do not improvise that exception.

Step 9: Restart with flow restored

Install a clean filter, seat every O-ring and housing correctly, close the drain, reopen each required circulation valve, and refill to the specified level. Check for leaks before restarting. Watch for normal jet flow and error codes from a safe position. If flow remains restricted after the exact cleaning and filter steps, stop the system and contact Plunge support instead of repeatedly running the chiller dry or without a filter.
